In this play, Tennessee Williams has explored much more deeply than he did in “The Glass Menagerie” the tragedy of a

society, This time the exploration hurts. Everybody knows how the title originated from a name actually painted on a New Orleans streetcar. Mr. Williams has made it a symbol, in having his tragic heroine, Blanche DuBois, observe that desire is the opposite of death. Blanche has seen plenty of death, lingering in the decaying ancestral Mississippi mansion while parents, aunts and uncles made a recurrent, gruesome mort~ uary pageant. She has seen her young husband, somewhat mixed up mentally, a suicide. 80 when she comes to visit her married sister, Stella, and Stella’'s roisterous husband, Stanley Kowalski, it's sort of significant that she boards the streetcar named “Desire.” In the dismal tenement of two rooms with curtains between, a sequence of conflict develops. Blanche first wants to get Stella away from Stanley. Stanley drinks, plays poker, is noisy and aggressively proud of his lack of refinement. Insensitive to some things, he hates being called a “Polack.” Mr. Willlams has written so much into this play that customary review space can't cover it. But the battle between Blanche and Stanley needs emphasis, It grows -and overshadows almost everything else in this stage wonderland of quick scene changes, marvelous lighting and portentous sound-effects — railroad trains, thunder and melancholy blues music from a hypothetical backstage cafe.

Blanche is an ex-English teacher—fired on moral grounds. Spectators learn that sadly. Stanley learns it gleefully, because it serves his purposes. And Stanley is semi-victorious when Blanche, after a too-long visit, is taken away in protective custody to some sort of “snake pit.” A play with so much content as “A Streetcar Named Desire” can’t be summarized. When I read the play last week, I' visualized Blanche as

Miss Hagen projects across the footlights, with great talent, tact and integrity, the personality of the girl who is presumed to be sick in what is presumed to be a healthy society, ] Anthony Quinn, as Stanley, does the best job I've yet seen on the local stage with the Neanderthal type of male role. He's absolutely real and believable. Bpace is short for further mentions, but Mary Welch, as Stella, gives a beautiful performance. So does Russell Hardie, as Mitch, Blanche’s last and lost chance for a husband. If you hunger for real theater, here is some of the most amazing casting and direction local houses
