Grief Awaits Angler | If Bass Gets on Hook Before Season Oper

and panfish, cats ment.

Re-opening of the bass season! on the morning of Thursday, June 16, will draw hundreds of anglers to their favorite lakes and streams, but the crowds will be small in comparison to those of past years when the closed season applied to all game fish,

Weather Aids: Anglers

Almost ideal weather conditions have prevailed for fishing the past few days and the anglers have been taking full advantage of the extra hour of daylight after work. Streams have been clear and lower, in fact some of them are getting too low and the fish have been collecting in the deeper pools. Generally, the catch has not been as good the past week as it was the week before, as reflected in reports from over the state.

What About Fishing?

Spend a few hours around a bunch of anglers and you'll have all kinds of ideas about the fishing in Indiana waters, Some of ‘them prefer to take their chances on getting a “mess” of fish in the “home” waters. Others droll about the fishing in Canada, Minnesota and other areas where the lakes and streams are just beginning to be subjected to the fishing pressure that Hoosier waters have had for years. You'll hear bitter words about stream pollution being responsible for some angler’s empty stringer; a demand: that the Conservation Department produce and plant more fish. Then there’ll be an argument over planting fingerlings or holding them over until they Ske legal length before releasing em.

Debate Research

Then some angler will bring up the report by research workers indicating that at least some Hoosier streams, lakes and pits are overstocked with fish from the standpoint of the food supply aviilable. That's good for: another half-hour's debate. But, you won't get any argu-

or a closed season on all game species during the breeding sea son? ; ‘ 1

Here's Your Chance

If you have anything to'say for or against Indiana's fishing; if you have any suggestions on how the fishing can be improved in your locality now and in the coming years—take a few minutes to write down your ideas and mail them to Outdoors, The Indianapolis Times, 214 W. Maryland St., Indianapolis. Don't forget to give your name and address.

Tear-Jerking Fish ‘Story Practically every true fisher man has a heartbreaking story to tell, but the prize in that vein should go to Judge Wilbur Royce of the Appellate Court.

Recently the Judge journeyed to the Tippecanoe River near Monticello, bent on catching some channel cats. He succeeded in hooking three of them along with a three and a quarter pound sucker. The heartbreaker? Well in less than one hour the judge also hooked four bass each. ranging from 14 to 19 inches in length. And it just about broke his heart to throw them back. You see the bass season doésn’t open until June 186,

Some Don't Care

Occasionally you run into one of those rare souls who likes to go fishing but doesn’t care whether he catches anything. He will maintain that he gets a thrill out of being outdoors and testing his skill in laying the plug or fly just where he wants it to go.
