lturbi and Truman, Compare Music Notes

President, Possibly Coached by Own Daughter, Displays Fund of Knowledge

By ELISE MORROW WASHINGTON, May 14—Jose Iturbi got together at a party here the other night with another well known piano player named Harry S. Truman. The event, doubtless, will not be remembered as one of the great moments of musical history, but it aid leave Mr. Iturbi highly astonished. First the President played a little-known Chopin number, and Mr, Iturbi then reeled it off. No music critics were present. When amateur night was over, Mr. Truman and Mr. Iturbi swapped notes on classical music with that other expert, Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson, famous in capital parlors for his goldenthroated delivery of “My Old Kentucky Home.” Mr. Iturbi was amazed by the President’s thorough knowledge. “How do you figure this deal?” he inquired, wonderingly, after Mr. Truman had expounded with considerable authority on some obscure fugues. “Margaret's probably been coaching him,” an-

Chopin was mixed happily with such other classics as “For

ministration, “Missouri Waltz,” “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” and “My Old Kentucky Home.” Mr. Iturbi and the President took care of Chopin and left the other department to Barnee Breeskin, no mean piano player himself, who had left off introducing Senators and visiting mayonnaise kings at the Shoreham Hotel's Blue Room for the evening so he could play for the Presidential party.

(Stray thought: Life in Washington will certainly be hell if

Cabinet Members Come Bearing Gifts =~ - The cabinet presented Mr. Truman with a silver coffee service, and other presents included a dozen miniature pianos and an abundance of trinkets—gag stuff like the spring “snake” which jumps out of a can when you take the lid off. It was not precisely a cosy party—there were 80 guests—but things were as informal as they can be with a Secret Service man for almost every diner. The only man:in white tie and talls was the Metropolitan Opera baritone, Robert Merrill. The Truman-Barkley-Vinson-generated bourbon and branch water atmosphere is contagious, and it helped to warm and soften the occasion. In addition to the White House gang and the cabinet, the guests included Gen. and Mrs, George C. Marshall; ECA’s Paul Hoffman and his wife, who don't go out very much, and the big, bluff oil man from California,’ Ed Pauley. Sticking tb the Truman social formula, the women separated themselves from the men after coffee, and went off into another room to chatter, The party broke up early. This has been a musical and literary week, with such aesthetic lions as Lawrence Tibbett, the baritone, and Louis Bromfield, the writing farmer, decorating the lush spring landscape.

Tibbetts Feted at Davies' Estate :

Mr. Tibbett was given an elegant luncheon by Mrs. Joseph E. Davies. Cocktails were served under the trees of the Davies estate here, with mushroom and crabmeat hors d'oeuvres, followed by a dreary little snack consisting of vichyssoise, shad roe, soft shell crabs, sliced turkey and Smithfield ham, mixed green salad, ice cream and petit fours. It's a rough life, kids. Sharing this squalor were Adm. Emory 8. Land, former head of the U. 8. Maritime Commission and now director of the Air Transport Association; Sen. and Mrs. Owen Brewster of Maine, and retired Army Secretary and Mrs. Kenneth C. Royall. Mrs. Royall, the lucky girl, was the only feminine guest at a farewell stag dinner given the other evening in honor of her husband by his secretariat in the Department of the Army, Gordon Gray and Tracy Vorhees, at the fashionable F street Club. At that, ‘Ma Royall was invited just for the dessert course. Mr. Bromfield was honor guest at what he calls a lap party, or a buffet supper, given by Mrs. Perle Mesta, and Mr. Tibbett was Mrs. Mesta’s lion several nights later at a big dinner. The Navy was almost washed away in its own tears at the otherwise gay Navy Relief Ball last week. John L. Sullivan, who resigned as Secretary of the Navy after a magnificent row with President Truman and Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, was introduced, and asked to make a toast. Sullivan strode dramatically to the center of the room, raised his glass, and said, “I give you the only toast the Navy knows— to the President of the United States.”

It appeared that if he went In with his queen he would have to lead back into a heart trap (the ace on the board and the jack in the closed hand) or lead a club in which case declarer could trump while discarding a losing heart from dummy. East finally decided to play his low heart on the theory that ideclarer might have jack-nine-small and finesse the nine spot.

South played the seven and West won with the eight.
