Flower Show

Plan Joint

Event This Fall Will Be Public

Irvington Women’s Garden Club and Green Thumb Garden Club have their all laid for getting together a joint fall flower show. Combining forces, they're planning a larger show to be open to the public. The Irvington club's meeting this week on Friday afternoon will take up two common garden prosiems, Mrs. E. F. Madinger will speak on summer-long bloom. Painted daisies and blue flax, she suggests, make an unusual combination. After June's delphinium and lilies, phlox is dependable for July. Later in the fall hardy asters both dwarf and tall will bloom. Mrs. H. L. Mote will talk on edgings and ground covers. In her own yard she uses the variegated leaved, lavender flowering funkia for an edging plant. Good for sun as well as shade, she's! found. The meeting is at the home of| Mrs, H. H, Trager, 907-D Ellen-| berger Parkway, West Drive. Mrs. W. G. Holley will assist Mrs. Trager.

Blue Flower Garden Club members will bring flowers and favorite accessories for making arrangements to Broadway Evangelical Church for their all-day meeting on Tuesday. The morning session will be devoted to flower fixing. After a covered dish luncheon there'll be a business meeting. Later Mrs. W. D. Kautsky and Mrs. P, A. Hennessee, the club's two accredited judges, will award ribbons to the best arrangements. Mrs, C, E. Adams has charge of preparations. “When other garden clubs ask you for program ideas” says Mrs. Robert Blessing of Arbutus Garden Club, “you can tell them our idea of a flower name guess-

ing contest made an interesting) ~~"

—and surprising—meeting.”

Q--What is the black, knot-like warty growth that appears almost every year on the branches of our plum tree? A--It's a disease of stone fruits known as black-knot or plum wart, according to Harlan Fulmer of the county agent's office. It's common on both plum and cherry trees. But it's easy to control and easy to eliminate. Cut. out and destroy all the

By MARGUERITE SMITH THERE'S BEEN an epidemic of books lately about how we're all shortly going to starve to death because we common folk (drat us) just don’t know i; enough about soil conservation. Of course we don’t. But the nice thing about most of us is that we're willing to learn. So let the gentlemen who view with alarm cheer up. They should never underestimate the power of the ladies. Especially when two or three or 20 gather together. For that's how another school—this time John Strange, northeast of Broad Ripple, happens to have a new garden club ‘this year. Its purpose—to promote interest in flowers, gardens, and wildlife. It started when the Forest Hills Garden Club members got their heads together last year. With Mrs. E. J. Dieckman, president, they decided it was high time they did something about junior gardens.

» » on MRS. ROSS SMITH is a member of the club. Her husband is a township trustee. “So it seemed logical to tie up our junior work with a county

also chairman of the club's civic interests committee. Chester Quear, school principal, and Merrill Hughes, science teacher and sponsor of the club, are all for it. Mr. Hughes, a new home owner himself, says it's not only the sixth graders in the club who are learning about plants, With the sponsoring adult garden club providing many of the seeds and the cheerful cooperation they get from the school, the 21 youngsters have a fine collection of plants from petunias and pansies to tomatoes and pinks to take home to their own gardens, At least half had not gardened before, says Mr. Hughes. Members of the club are Kay Bateman, Susie Beecher, Betty Cofer, Nancy Conrad, Clara Duckworth, Gretchen Ehlert, Bernice Joyce, Loretta Stewart and Rosalte Turpin. Boys who belong include Billy Joe Buser,

Feed Tulips For Big Bloom

Don't Cut Foliage Until Yellow

You want your tulips to have big flowers again next year, DON'T cut the foliage off after the flowers have faded, DO fertilize your tulip row now with high phosphorous garden fertilizer. Use a pound to 25 feet of row, or about a tablespoonful to a square foot. Water it in well. Keep ground moist (not soaked) until leaves have turned

old black-knot galls right away. Then for complete control call your county agent's office for free leaflet 201. It goes into detail on cause and cure of this fungus disease.
