Squires Should Get More, Subdebs Agree; Amount Suggested Ranges From $2 to $3 By JEAN MANEY WEEKLY ALLOWANCES are something every teen-ager should have—the teen-agers think. The three sub debs interviewed this week are convinced that parents should pay their sons and daughters a certain, definite sum each week in return for chores done at home. “I THINK that a small allowance of two dollars a week is enough for a sub deb if she knows how to spend wisely,” Doris Graham says. She's a junior at Broad Ripple High School and the daughter of Mr, and Mrs, T. F. Graham, 929 Northview Ave. “Money for lunches and transportation should be separate items from your weekly allowance. That should be used for fun and small, personal needs. I think that if you have a job you g should take -care of yourself — except 3 for clothes, of course. This clothes allowance idea sounds goods, but I think most gals Doris would rather trust their mother's judgment,” Doris says. She believes that junior high school students should begin receiving regular allowances.

Doris is another supporter of bigger and better allowances for squires. 8he works on the yearbook staff at Broad Ripple - and belongs to the Honor Soclety, Quill and Scroll and the Dramatic Club. Doris is also a member of the KAK, VTS and PAL Bub Deb Clubs. A future liberal arts major, Doris is undecided about whether to attend Hanover College or DePauw University.

THE SUB DEB and Squire Federation élected a male president for the first time in the organization's history, Mike McCarthy of Cathedral High 8chool was named head of the

federation at a meeting yesterday afternoon in Ayres’ Auditorium. He's a member of the Counts Club.

A squire takes over the office of vice president, too. Jim Alltop of Howe High School will fill the second spot. Jim belongs to the RUB Squire Club. Ruth Raferty, a St. Mary's Academy student and a member of the ZAMS Sub Deb Club, is the newly elected secretary. ~ ” ” FIVE CHAIRMEN for the “White Whirl” were chosen. They are Patty Ball, a Sub Deb Club member ftom Shortridge High School; Bea Douglas, an OBN from St. Agnes Academy; Jack Edgington, a member of the DUKES from Howe; Barbara Hyde, a HIT from Broad Ripple High School, and Joe Lutz, a member of the SPADES from Cathedral. Mike was floored at being elected. “I was so surprised when I found out that I, and not one of the gals, was going to be the new president that I almost didn’t believe it. I'm going to try to be a good president and I hope that none of the sub debs or squires will regret voting for me,” he said. Mike's vote was one of the highest on record for a federation election. Its Time and Place By JEAN WHEN BALMY weather comes, it's wonderful to get out of heavy clothing into summer duds. But here's a word of warning, gals. There's a time and a place for casual un-dress costumes. And it's not the city streets. Poor Grandmother had to don hat and gloves and a longsleeved walking costume when she went out in public. Cotton dresses were taboo in the city and high buttoned shoes were the rule. We're luckier now. Any simple summer frock is at home in urban surroundings. Gloves and hats are unnecessary — except for church and formal occasions. "Easy-going shoes are commonplace. - Even bare legs are acceptable — under certain circumstances. But there are still a few dont’s, chums. ". '® - SHORTS AND rolled-up dungarees are definitely out for city wear. So are halter or bra-tops and sun-back or bare-shoulder dresses by daylight. Peasanttype frocks better keep to the country, too. But what about bare legs? Well, the rule is this, You may go without stockings in the city, provided your shoes have covered toes and heels. Open-ended slippers need nylons. . Barefoot sandals should be banished to the beach or your own backyard. And ankle socks aren't
