Playing With Gun

Finds .22 Pistol in Family Car A seven-year-old girl. was shot through the left hand yesterday when she fired a .22 caliber pistol} she found in the car owned by her grandfather. Patricia Olteam, of 1001 W. Morris St., the victim, found the gun on the front seat of the car while her mother was out shopping at the grocery store, police said. Mrs. Mattie Olteam said she heard the “pop” of the gun when she entered.the house and then heard the crash of breaking glass.

Shoots Out Light Running outside, she learned that her daughter had shot out one headlight of the car and had wounded herself. Inside the automobile, her son Charles, 2, was playing on the front seat, Mrs. Olteam said she at first thought the sound of the shot was one of the cap guns her children often play with. Police gave the child first aid treatment for her wound at the scene, then transferred her to General Hospital for further aid.

Police Radio Gets New Call Letters

WMDZ, familiar call letters of the Indianapolis Police Department radio station for the last 20 years, will be dropped as of 7 a’ m, today. The Federal Communications Commission yesterday announced the new call letters will be K8A318. Reason for the change, according to Capt. Robert R. Batts, police radio supervisor, is that the FCC is running out of four-letter calls for commercial stations and ships at sea, The police départment now will acknowledge calls from cars by restating the car number, instead of using the call letters. The new call letters will be broadcast at half hour intervals, according to the FCC directive.
