Mr. Fixit—
Imperfect Paint Job Is Usually
Common Error Is fo Apply Finish Coat Before Previous One Is Dry and Hard
HUBBARD COBB, Your Hand
yman
Somewhere we ran into this little gem, “When a good painter
applies a good paint to a good surface the paint should last for four or five years.” So much for that. Here are a few common paint ailments and what you have to do to cure them. ’ When the finish coat of paint becomes covered with fine cracks
it is called “ last coat before the previous one was hard and dry. The remedy is to sand down the finish coat smooth and then apply a new finish coat.
If things get really. bad and the cracks extend right through all the coats to the wood it is called “alligatoring.” This can be caused by not giving each coat time to dry or maybe it’s because the paint was no good. In any event all the paint has to come off and a fresh start made. From here we go to those three little dears, “blistering, scaling and peeling.” These can be due to someone painting over damp wood or because after the paint was on moisture. got around in back and was drawn through the wood by heat. When it came out it took the paint with it. The cure—remove the loose paint and start off fresh. It might also pay to find the origin of the moisture.
How to Replace Cracked Siding
One thing that could always be said for caves was that nothing much ever happened ta their out-
side walls and that's more than, you can say about dwellings these days. Anyway, if you live in a
house with wood siding and you

find some of the siding has split or cracked, here is what you have to do. First of all get hold of some wood wedges and drive them between the ed board and the one above. This will open up a slight gap so you can saw out the split section of siding with a thin compass saw, Now you remove the wedges and force the upper piece of
siding back where it belongs. Slip
a hack saw blade up under the damaged area of siding and cut through any nails, Now it should be possible to pull the damaged portion out. Get a new piece of siding and cut it to the exact size to fit the opening. It's important that you get the measurements correct because you don't want any big cracks.

Slip the patch up into position and drive some nails through the lower portion of the piece above to hold it in place. Give the patch a priming coat of paint and when this is dry, fill in any seams with white lead or putty. Then follow up with two additional coats of paint.
Prepare for Winter
During the Summer We once heard of a brown bear who used to spend the month of May looking around for a good cave to use during the coming
winter. This bear was very smart, smarter in fact than a lot of us humans who don’t do anything in the way of figuring how

to keep warm until we get " = ~ Now it happens that summer is an ideal time for making ar-
rangements for a warm winter First of all you should consider the business of insulation—walls and roof, Then you might give a few seconds to storm windows. After that you can sit back and worry about the heating plant. Is it outdated requiring a lot of yours or someone else's time just to keep it running? Is it undersized which means that it must always burn at full tilt? If it is then it won't be with you for long because when you force a furnace constantly you cut down its length of service considerably. How about the pipes, ducts, register and radiators? Are they all properly installed and of the right size to give you maximum heat for your fuel or do you find that some rooms are boiling hot while others are somewhere around 33 degrees F.? These, chums, are just a few of the things you should ask yourself some afternoon while dozing in that hammock.

And you can do a pretty good job of soundproofing a partition: by lining each side with insulating board set away from the ——n® plaster with furring strips. The space between the plaster and insulating board should be filled
with dry fill insulation.
