Spilled Drink No Hazard To This Top ~~ Gould Collection Is Low Priced . By ELIZABETH TOOMEY NEW YORK, May 7 — Spilled = drinks or extra guests for dinner

the size of ordinary card tables form the basis of the unit. They can be used singly, fitted
cealed slides under the tops, a 24inch leaf can be suspended between the tables to seat eight or ten people. The table is just one piece in an tnusual new collection of modern furniture designed by Allan Gould. By using new materials and fabrics, Gould has managed to bring. good modern design within reach of the average pocketbook. A studio bed with foam rubber back cushions designed for comfortable sitting sells for less than $200 in muslin. A clever dining room chair with horsehair upholstered seat sells for under $30.
Coated Canvas Used So far the furniture is sold only through the retail outlet here, but Gould hopes he's solved a cost problem that eventually will bring good modern design to homes in every city. One of his cost remedies is to use coated canvas on some of his storage pleces. It's a washable - material in a tweedy design like that used on luggage. Two and three drawer chests have a can-vas-covered frame with drawers and legs of natural cherry. Gould uses brown and white, black and white, and tan with brown on his canvas tops. One sectional storage unit for the lving room includes drawers and both open and closed shelf space. When the designer does use an all-wood piece, he lkes to leave the wood with a natural finish. ‘The popular conception of mod- } ern design and bleached woods is = completely missing.

Cotton
By JEAN TABBERT KEY YOUR house to cotton this summer. It will cool off furniture, seem to refrigerate floors. Use it as Fabric Designer Hope Skillman has done in her living room. She created a companion color scheme, the draperies in peacock blue and white satin striped chambray. Match ing plain blue chambray in quilted design covers two love seats, The cotton rug in off-white is a bright accent. : At Adams’ there is a striped Schumacher fabric of sail cloth. The colors ars green and white or blue and orange. It would cover summer furniture or add dash to slipcovers. Rooms assume a trim, cool look with Dutch organdy curtains, white and untrimmed at Block's. They've moved into the living room, look just as appropriate there as in the kitchen. Idea is that more light is admitted, there is no need for draperies, Privacy, too, can be maintained when the bottom pair is drawn. Light and air stream in above if the curtains are kept open.
Printed and plain cotton chintz frames the window of this dining room, The print is used again to cover the whole wall for a glamorous effect. All the chintz is washable "Everglaze" material. Note the mixture of periods in the room, the china plates attached to the valance.
ALSO nice enough for a living room is an organdy embroidered pair also at Block's, These are floor-length, will give the same dignified air as drapes. At Block's, too, is a strawberry chintz ensemble for the bedroom. This comes in either single or double-bed width, and there are valances, drapes, vanity skirts and pillow shams with the same colorful pattern. Wasson's carries pleaters by Florence Parks which give draperies a neat swag effect, offer no stumbling block to air, Strike a cool note at your dining table this summer with burlap place mats and napkins.
“ These can be dyed any shade, but they're new
and different just as they can be bought at Ayres’ from the bolt. Simply decide on the size, cut and hem by hand. (Burlap isn't cotton—it's made of jute, hemp or flax—but the fabric is a practical and smart solution for summer living.) Hang curtains of the stuff at the windows of your summer cottage and match these to the

INew Toaster Works With Radiant Heat!

Scorch-Proof Steam Iron On Market 5
Perfectly toasted bread every time. That's the result that's guaranteed with the new Sunbeam radiaht control toaster. The bread lowers itself automatically, thus turning on the current.’ When the pieces are completely toasted, the current turns off automatically. The toast raises itself silently without popping or banging. iy The radiant control automatically adjusts itself to any kind of bread for there's a thermostat
plates spread the warmth uniformly. Available in kitchenware departments locally.
Scorch-Proof Iron Lighter than any dry or steam iron on the market, the Silex steam iron, to be in stores here the middle of next month, weighs only two and three-fourths pounds.. There's an even distribution of steam heat to every part of the sole plate, yet the {ron is scorch proof. The way the heat covers the iron makes it safe for synthetic materials—nylon, rayon, etc. It presses woolens like a tailor, freshens velvets, felts and suedes. Starched and unstarched cottons and linens are easily done up, too. The iron is smaller, easier to handle than any other on the market. It's made for either a left or right-handed person and irons three times the length of a usual steam iron. Reason: It holds one pint of water, more than the average steam iron now being produced. Another hazard has been overcome by the Silex people. There's no spitting when the cord is inserted to transform: the iron into a dry type. Price comes to below the average for a steam iron.

By ELIZABETH HILLYER OF COURSE you can wash the wood parts of furniture with soap and water. Why not? Because cleaners and polishers work so well most of the time the question of whether or not soap and water should be used at any time is often asked.
