"THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH"

By W. L. Latham /,

Many people believe the first day of the week is “the Christian Sabbath,” or the Sabbath Christ made. It is true that A SABBATH was MADE, and that Christ made it, for the Bible declares that “All things were made by Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. , , . He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.” John 1:3, 10, 11 (Col. 1:12-19; Heb. 1:1, 2.) After creating this. world, He made provision to keep man from forgetting that fact, for we read: “He hath MADE His wonderful works TO BE REMEMBERED.” Ps. 111:4. He did this by setting apart a definite day to be kept in commemoration of creation. After commanding us to “Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy,” He gives us the reason WHY we should do so: “FOR in six days the Lord made Heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: WHEREFORE the Lord blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it.” Ex. 20:8, 11. The Lord MADE the

Sabbath by resting on THE SEVENTH DAY, blessing THE

SEVENTH DAY, and SANCTIFYING it, or setting it apart to be kept as a memorial of creation. (Gen. 2:1-3,) This memorial of creation was for the entire human race, for, just as Paul tells us that the woman was made FOR MAN (1 Cor. 11:9), Christ declares “The Sabbath was made FOR MAN.” Mark 2:27, Both the woman and the Sabbath were made for Adam and all his posterity. Not.pnly the Jews, but also “the sons of the strangers” were defthitely required to keep the Sabbath, (Isa. 56:6, 7.) The Sabbath is a part of that divine law, of which Christ said, “It is easier for Heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail” Luke 16:17. Both Christ and the apostles kept the seventh day Sabbath throughout the New Testament times, for we read: “He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and, AB, HI8 CUSTOM WAS, he went into the synagogue on the Babbath Day, and stood up for to read.” Luke 4:16. “And Paul, AS HIS MANNER WAS, went in unto them, and three Sabbath Days reasoned with them out of the scriptures.” Acts, 17:2, “And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded THE JEWS and THE GREEKS." Act. 18:4. He did not have one day for the Jews, and another for the Greeks. On another occasion, “When the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, THE GENTILES besought’ that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath, And the next Sabbath Day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.” Acts 13:42, 44. This was a special meeting for the Gentiles, held many years after Christ. On another occasion we find Paul conducting a reLgions service out by the river on the Sabbath Day. (Acts The New Testament not only tells us the Sabbath was ‘MADE FOR MAN, and that Christ is Lord of the Sabbath, but it also tells us many things He said about how the S8abbath should be kept. Christ also emphasized the fact that the 8abbath was to continue in force after His departure, for, in speaking of the destruction of Jerusalem, which was to occur about forty years after His death, He said: “But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, NEITHER ON THE SABBATH DAY.” Matt, 24:20. The Sabbath is a day of “holy convocation.” (Lev. 23; Heb. 10:25.) They could not keep it properly if fleeing from their enemies. The seventh day Sabbath is the only day of the week to which Christ lays any special claim. He declares Himself to be Lord of the Babbath Day. (Matt. 12:8.) He tells us when and how and why He made it. He Himself kept it, and taught others how to keep it. His word tells us it is to be kept in the earth made new. (Isa. 66:22, 23.) "But He said absolutely nothing about the observance of the first day of the week. Therefore the seventh day is “THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH.” Address your question to me at 2812 Ruckle 8t., Indianapolis 5, Ind.
