SCARE A CROW WITH A BCARECROW--Can you fool an old crow? For hundreds of years people have tried different ways of keeping birds away from seeds and seedlings. One of the most popular and picturesque ways used toddy ia the familiar scarecrow, When I see one I always think that some gardner must have grown tired of planting and wanted a good excuse for satisfying the urge to design something original. It doesn't take the birds long to find out that the human-looking scarecrow is only a “sheep in wolf's clothing.” The temptation to enjoy insects turned up in newly tilled soil soon brings the birds around in spite of the scarecrow. Get a set of old clothes, man's or woman's, and make a crude frame, Yoy will enjoy the dressing of your garden sentinel as much as making A snowman, Stuff the clothes with straw, and send a picture to me of you and your scarecrow: -Let me guess which is you.
