Dale EschewsRemember Heart Bid To Cop Game He Wins Play With No Trump
By EASLEY BLACKWOOD . MR. DALE knows it's not good Humanics to insist on playing; 4 all the hands. But holding the! South cards on this particular] deal he felt that a heart contract was superior to no trump. As you!’ see he was right. At no trump the enemy could have cached five diamond tricks at the start. Against the actual four heart contract Mrs. Keen opened the king of diamonds. Noting Mr. Masters’ play of the nine, she continued with the queen and an-

other diamond. Mr. Dale trumped the third lead and paused to look the situation over. . Clearly the success or failure of the hand depended on the Jay of the cards in the spade suit. 8o Mr. Dale tcok three rounds of trumps discarding a small club from dummy on the third lead. Then he led a small spade on which Mrs. Keen played the six. At this point he did not make the mistake of playing the queen from the board. There was no hurry about that.: If Mrs. Keen had the king, the queen could be finessed later. After all, one trick had to be lost in the spade suit in any case. Giving himself every chance, Mr. Dale finessed dummy’s nine spot. And it took Mr Masters’ king to beat it. Now the ace and queen of spades in dummy were both good and the contract was home. Note that Mrs. Keen could not have saved the day by going up with her ten of spades. In that case dummy’s queen would have bec- played and Mr. Masters’ |i ki* would have won. } but then dummy would have ace-nine over Mrs. Keen's jackeight, and Mr. Dale would sim-

Q—How can I rejuvenate a forsythia shrub that has been neglected and hasn't bloomed very well this year? A—Bloom on a forsythia may be impaired by a mild fall such | as we had last year when some of the flowers open out of seagon. (There are also new wvarieties that flower much better
yards this year, where the entire bush is simply full of golden bells.) In general you can help your forsythia by cutting out a few of the older stalks at the base of the ground each year just after it blooms, then heading back sprawling tips to encourage growth of new wood. Weeping forsythia is a naturally graceful plant. It can be trained to a single stem tree fashion (braced fhe first year or two) and allowed to droop

By JEAN COMMENCEMENT is comsing. Soon you Seniors will be planning the details of your graduation, School traditions play a big part, of course, But certain decisions will be up to you. How elaborate will the exercises be? Will it be necessary to. buy expensive new clothing? Are you planning a Senior Dance? Will it and the other activities be run for the benefit of a small clique or for fun for all? The way you handle your commencement doings will measure your skill in the practice of democracy. Beware of the two snobberies—financial and social. If your program is geared to kids with sumptuous allowances, others will be hurt. They'll have to make unfair financial demands on their families, or drop out of some of the activities. If you set your social sights too . high some kids (or their parents) wlil be ill-at-ease and unhappy.
» ” » GRADUATION is a high point in your school life. Let your class stand united--one | for all and all for one, And plan something simple. Elaborate or expensive details are strictly out of place in school commencements.
