Ee Glorious Gloria still Glamorous
~ It Takes Makeup to Make La Swanson Look Like 50 -
= By Erskine Johnson -- HOLLYWOQD, May 3—It's still Glorious Gloria. After 50 years, five husbands and three grandchildren,
Gloria Swanson still has to
be “aged” to look 50. She
needs grayer hair, lines in her face.
Paramount studio insisted on it for her role of an ex-silent film star in the picture, “Sunset Boulevard.”
eo was indignant. “Photograph me as I look, » she said. The cameraman »eamed. “You'll photograph like 30,” he said. “She has to look 50,” the studio sald.
“Okay,” said Gloria, “make But I won't feel like it.”
# ” » GLORIA WAS SITTING in the sun—a bright, unflattering sun— on the steps of the, Paramount dressing room building. Unflattering, did I say? Not for Gloria. The lady doesn’t need soft lights and trick shadows. She was wearing a black slack suit and smoking a cigaret in a long gold holder. It was difficult for me to believe that I was 13 the first time I saw her on the screen. She made m pulse jump then and it was jump-| ing again, - » n 1 ASKED HER about those fabulous Swanson stories which| have become part of the old Hol-| lywood. legend.

“Gloria,” people sniffed, it is undignified for a star of her caliber to be seen walking.” Gloria denfed that. “I had just returned from Europe and a serious illness. I was still weak. The doctor ordered that wheel chair.” -
No Private Elevator ABOUT HAVING a private elevator in a New York apartment house. ; i “I was in a hurry once and I rode up to my apartment in-a freight elevator. By the time the story got back to Hollywood it had become a private elevator.” About her refusal to have her children photographed because, |8ossips said, they were imbeciles. { “Ridiculous,” she said. “In those days in Hollywood we all | kept our children in the background. Broaden: Tora Sensitive, Is a Simply Marvelous Show
By HENRY BUTLER You might have thought they were collecting taxes at the Murat last night instead of putting on one of the season's best shows. A sparse house greeted the
disappointing t h e wonderfully trained and talented cast of actors, singers and dancers. Here is a ly marvelous show, It defies description and comparison, because not one musical in a thousand has as much {intelligence and good taste. I only wish I had space to enu-

unexpected and avoid the obvious. The show makes wonderful sense
moment. Enchanted Village By now you certainly know the story of the enchanted Scottish village of Brigadoon, which was placed under a spell in the 18th Century and comes to life for one day each century. Two American boys, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, on a walking trip in Scotland, arrive in the village, not shown on their map, in time for the 1948 awakening. Tommy meets Fiona MacLaren. Jeff meets Meg Brockie (Susan Johnson), one of the drollest female comedians in musical-show literature. This enchanted-village idea could be one awful headache if ft had been done by some of our operetta confectioners. I mention no names. But Messrs. Lerner and Loewe, with superb ballet assistance by the great Agnes De Mille, contrive to make the thing real, plausible and moving.

Brooks) and Fiona (Priscilla Gillette) convinces you because it convinces the actors themselves. That's good writing, Give show people a neat, honest and sensitive script. and they'll outdo themselves. Mr. Brooks and Miss Gillette, both admirably cast, project. right across the footlights their non-stagey sincerity. It Surprises You The whole show is non-stagey, in the sense that it never messes with cliches. You can't predict it. You may think you've seen a lot of shows and know just about what's going to happen, but ‘Brigadoon” surprises you—as in the snap-bing sequence fo Meg's

its wonderful drunken-ballet background, followed by the solemn, bagpipe-accompanied dirge for the tragically frustrated Harry Beaton (Kenneth LeRoy, an excellent dancer), slain in the big chase scene that opens Act II, It would take two or three reviews to give adequate credits. Is Already Under Way
WASHINGTON, May 3 (UP)—
& The 1952 presidential campaign is
Fj about three years away but backers of Gen, Douglas MacAr-
thur already have their lines out. The new Washington telephone directory lists two telephones for a “MacArthur for President” club. Ervin Hohensee, College Park, Md., runs the outfit. “On a full-time basis, too,” he said. He said the club was formed during the 1948 campaign. : “We started a little late, the last time,” Mr. Hohensee said “But we're starting early for 1952." a ————— | Qa - OUTDOOR WESTSIDE rurares 7300 W.
