: By LOUISE FLETCHER, Times Woman's Editor THE PLUNGING NECKLINE, which started out as a style detail for afternoon dresses, has dived into the sportswear field . . . not just spectator sportswear but clothes for active sportswear. has been building up ever since. The pastel shirts call for a

One of the exponents of this dark-tie-with-pale-shirt fashion is Indiana’s Cole Porter whose “Kiss Me, Kate” music is a kigh-spot of the current Broadway season. With his favorite blue shirts, he chooses a black or a navy tie, they say.

_Finessing Tactics Yary According to Suit Holding

By EASLEY BLACKWOOD

* COUNT ‘ON Miss Brash to put a hand in a spot where things have to break just right to avoid a set. She ignored Mrs. Keen's bid of two clubs and jumped all the way to four spades in today's deal. She had a good hand—but not that good. Mrs. Keen took her king and ace of clubs on which Mr. Abel played the four and then the five, ‘ndicating no desire to have the

the Suit continued. At the third trick Mrs. Keen shifted to the five of aearts. Note that dummy bas the same high cards in nearts as the closed hand has in the spade suit, namely ace, queen and ten. But Mr. Dale realized he had to play the suits differently, If he lost one spade trick then he could not afford to lose any tricks in hearts.

Single Finesse Best

Holding only two hearts in his own hand, Mr, Dale knew there was no point in" double finessing.

In other words, h's best play to]

avoid any heart losers was to play the queen from dummny at the third trick, finessing against only one card, the king. When the queen of hearts held, the only problem was to limit the spades losers to one. So Mr, Dale led the three of spades from the board and put in the ten from his hand when Mr. Abel played low to the trick. Mrs. Keen won with the jack and returned a small heart. + Mr. Dale won with dummy’s ace amd led the four of spades, finessing the queen when Mr. Abel again played low, When this won he laid down the ace

‘Half-Sizes Are For Every Age

ASK MOST women what a half-size dress is and they'll tell you it's designed exclusively for the heavier older woman. They'd be wrong about it. While “half-sizes” come in an extensive size range to Include the heavier figure, the term doesn’t mean the styles are limited to those for the older matron. They include styles for every age group. , The “half-size” dress is designéd. for the 78 per cent of American women who do not have the tall, broad-shouldered figures of professional models. According to government statistics, these women are below b-feet 5%-inches in height and have narrower shoulders and wider hips than the so-called “model” sizes. s » o FOR THESE women to buy model sizes frequently means the necessity of having alterations made. A half-size, on the other hand, adjusts to narrow- . er shoulders, larger bust, or wider hips, eliminating costly alterations. +The half-size, too, has the shorter waistline usually need-
