Sin Bowlers Look On In Envy

Farmer's Daughter Takes Tourney Lead

=. COLUMBUS, 0. May 8 (UP)~City girls cast envious glances today at the seven-pin lead in the all-events class of the Women's International Bowling Congress posted by a 29-year-old farm girl

from Taylorville, 111.

Phyllis Bates, who calls herself “just a farmer's daughter,” was the cause of the envy. Her total of 1766 was something none of the urban keglerettes had been able iho 57 very oid bookkeeper spilled

to match so far. She started her Sunday, when she rolled a 141-265-246 for 652. She capped this yesterday by marking up a neat 553 in the doubles and a 561 in the singles. Miss Bates, who bowls with the Springfield" Classic League, brought an average of 170 here and last year she posted three 2020's in a row. The city girls were not left completely in the dust. Ruth Rice, all-events champion from St. Louis, moved into a third place tie in the all-events. Bowling on the same team as Miss Bates,

a 539 with the team, a 699 in the

high score on qoubles and a 550 in the singles

for 1758 total, Miss Rice also teamed with Ann Lepkorny for an 1160 and a fourth place in the doubles. Third place in the singles was taken over by'Crool Bolasino. of 8t. Louis, who is seeing her first national tournament action. She marked up a 636. In other changes, Marie Hodalski of Springfield, Ill, posted a 620 for fifth in the individual event and a standard service team from Madison, Ind., moved into 10th place in the city boosters event with a 1990.

By TY. SNIDER, United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, May 3—Beveral strange names were included gs! today in the list of baseball's top hitters as rookies and sophomores i basked = their moments of glory before the inevitable catches up

Three rot the top five in each league were comparative newcomers and some were almost certain to begin that long slide back into the

pack before the week is out. As usual,

hitter who couldn’t top .367 simply didn’t belong. The actual leaders up to today were the biggest surprises of the lot, with an unheralded rookie named Gordon Goldsberry of the Chicago White Sox leading the American League with 524 and sophomore Roy Campanella of Brooklyn the National's leader at .463. Played With Memphis Goldsberry, a slim six-footer splitting Chicago’s first-base spot with Steve Souchok, is one of the lads Manager Jack Onslow had at Memphis last year before he became skipper of the White Box. Hit fair enough for Jack at Mem- - phis with an adequate .289 but showed none of the stuff that so far has made him almost impossible to get out in the majors. Campanella, Brooklyn's Negro catcher, was a 288 hitter for the Brooks last season but he's a veteran of 13 years—nine of it in Negro leagues — and just cagey enough to alter his batting style for his second season. Crouching and shortening his grip slightly, the bulky backstop has been so phenomenal he still figures to be a rough man to handle when his average begins to tail off, He has péled four homers, tying him with four others for the National League lead. Harry (Peanuts) Lowery of the Chicago Cubs at 429, Virgil Stallcup of Cincinnati at .400, “Phil Cavaretta of the Cubs at 391 and Eddie Kazek of the St. Louis Cardinals with 367 complete the National League's “big five.”

Local Bowlers In State Tourney

Several local classic teams will try their luck this Saturday in the Men's State Bowling Tourney at Gary. On tap for the week-end are Pabst Blue Ribbon, Falls City Beer, Marott Shoes, and the youthful Rodebeck Motion Pictures squads. The best score racked up by Indlanapolis bowlers over the weekend was the 1244 game by Delaware's two “Bobs,” Carnagua and Susemichel, during the doubles. It?

Champs in Slump The Jimmy Smiths of South Bend, winners of the American Bowling Congress team title with a 3027, were apparently off their stride when they came up with a mild 2551 series in the state event, The local Kay Jewelers still hold top spot with a 2043. In the Women's International Bowling Congress at Columbus, 0., four Indianapolis squads are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Bowes Seal Fast, led by Capt.

Friday, Indiana Fur, captained by V’ilena Hansen, and Indianapolis Typewriter, captained by, Fran Snyder, roll Saturday, ' while Dorothy Lilly will lead DeWolf News on Sunday. Few Indian-|~ apolis bowlers have competed in the ladies’ classic so far, which

gave them the tie for fifth place. ’
