and Palmer,” said one director expressing the board's general sentiment. Mr. McBain, conservative as an executive suit in the ents store, can hardly be expected t institute any drastic shifts in

“Quality in merchandising and service to customers,” he has said ‘many: times, “I've heen so] steeped in these policies that I| couldn't change them.” . Mr. McBain was born in Grand, Rapids, Mich., on Feb. 9, 1902. | His mother used to take him to- Field's to Christmas displays.

and as he grew older he became determined to “be with Marshaii Field & Co. Taking time out for an education, he: went to Grand Rapids High School; then Phillips Exeter Academy, and entered the University of Michigan in 1920. But after two years he sold his widowed mother on the idea that | European travel was more valu{able than college Two days after their return in 1922 Mr. McBain applied for a job as a foreign buyer. Field's employment office sympathized with his travel urge, but consented to take him only as an adjuster.’ Within two years Mr. McBain

EE (had traveled high in the store § (to become secretary to the presi-

dent. He kept on moving up and in 1943 was made president. Mr. Palmer's birthplace was Waterboro, Me., on Mar. 12, 1899. He was graduated from Brown University and got two years of useful experience by doing shop a: in a small manufacturing ant.

Rose to Professorship - University of Chicago's School of Business then attracted him. Obtaining a masters degree in 1923 he rose to professorships in accounting and marketing. Mr, Palmer's knowledge of management was so sharp that big corporations engaged his services. Before he was 25 he was getting leaves of absence to tell gray-beard executives how to run their corporations. One of the companies he served was Field's. In 1936 Field's took Mr. Paimer| away from the campus as a full] time adviser. From that point his rise was spectacular. In four years he went through

a vice-presidency. During the war Mr. counseled several agencies and once helped reor-| ganize the OPA. But he has con-| isistently opposed the New Deal. “The efforts of all must be concentrated on the achievement

'duction.”
