18th Division Plans Reunion In New York

Local Veterans Of Unit Invited To May 7 ‘Meeting

Former members of the 78th (Lightning) Division from Indi-| anapolis and Marion County are expected to attend the group's reunion May 7in the 71st Regiment Armory, New York City. Several thousand veterans of the division from throughout the! country will gather for the all-day meeting. Advance invitations may be obtained from the national secretary, John Ghegan, 697 President St., Brooklyn, N. Y. WASHINGTON, Mar, 31 (UP) | —The Rev. Fr. John J. Cavanaugh, president of Notre Dame, has nothing at all against marriage. He favors it. But he wants good marriages, he told a House Armed Services subcommittee — marriages that will last, Father Cavanaugh testified as a member of a commission which drafted a proposed new pay scale for men in the armed services. Among other things, the commission proposed that family quarters allowances be provided for all servicemen except enlisted] men in the four lowest grades. | Subcommittee Chairman Paul| J. Kilday (D. Tex.) told Father) Cavanaugh some people had-eom-i plained that the proposal “dis-| criminates” against enlisted men | and discourages marriage. Opposes ‘Inducements’ | Father Cavanaugh replied that men in the lowest enlisted grades are usually young and subject to rigorous training and much moving around. “It is not good for inducements to be made to those men to get, married,” he said. “Some people have said we are prejudiced against marriage.
