THE MARK OF THE BEAST
By W. L. Latham
People have propounded many and varied ideas concerning the mark of the beast, but to most people this question is still a profound mystery. Often we are told that it is impossible for any one to solve this problem. But could you ‘imagine anything more strange or unreasonable than for God to threaten dire punishment upon those who receive this mysterious mark, and yet not make it possible for any one to know what he is talking about? The consequences of receiving
this sufficient to strike terror to the stoutest hearts. For instance, the seven plagues, the most severe judgments ever to be visited upon mankind, will be poured out upon those who
mark are indeed
have the mark of the beast: Rev. 16:1, 2, 10, 11. “The torments of fire and brimstone are also reserved for those who receive this mark: Rev. 14:9-11. In order to enter the pearly gates and stand before God upon the sea of glass, we must obtain the victory over the beast, his image, his mark and his number: Rev. 15:2-4, Would God be justified in visiting such terrible judgments upon those who receive the mark of the beast if he had never made it possible for any one to know what constituted that mark? Suppose a father would say to his little boy: “Son, if you ever receive the mark XYZ I will give you the worst punishment any boy ever received.” With frightened face, the little fellow asks, “Daddy, what do you mean by the mark ZYZ?" But the father replies, “I will never tell vou: but if you ever receive it, it will surely be the end of vow.” Would you think he was a just or reasonable father? Of course not. Then why should any one think God would threaten to punish mankind for receiving the mark of the beast, and yet not make it possible for us to know what that mark is? The book of Revelations, in which this mark is so repeatedly mentioned, is a book to be understood. It's very name indicates that. The word “revelation” means, That which is revealed, or made known. A blessing is pronounced upon those who read, and hear, and keep the things contained in this book: Rev. 1:3. How can we “keep those things which are written therein” if God has not made it possible to understand the symbols by which those things are portraved? The book of Revelations is not, and never has heen, a sealed book: Rev. 22:10. It is very evident that the mark of the beast is something of a religious character, for we are told “that as many as would not WORSHIP the image of the beast should be killed. And he caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond. to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” Rev. 13:15-17. Therefore the mark of the beast is some.sign whereby those who worship according to the dictates of the powers that enforce the mark will be known. By receiving this mark men will escape persecution by these earthly powers. But in the end, the wrath of God will be poured out on them in the seven last plagues, and the fire and brimstone that will devour the wicked. Friends, would you like to escape the awful judgments threatened against those ‘who recefve the mark of the beast? WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW WHO THE. BEAST REPRESENTS, AND WHAT CONSTITUTES HIS MARK? If so, vou are invited to the South Side Seventh-Day Adventist Church, corner of Orange and Laurel Sts., 3 blocks east and 1 block south of Fountain Square, tomorrow night, Sunday, Mar. 27, at 7:30. Address your questions to me at 2812 Ruckle St., Indianapolis 5, Ind. } .
