By JEAN MANEY GOING TO COLLEGE in“volves a lot more than—ciasses and! books these days. Modern educators realize that all work and no play make for bored and dull students. Indiana University has a planned program of fun for the students living in the dormitories, The fraternity and sorority members provide their own social life. ‘A typical calendar of events for a coed living in one of the women’s dorms includes four “big” dances, several informal ones, five ‘pajama’ parties, three open houses, two exchange dinners with the men's dorms, picnics, formal dinners

and teas plus a “Pixie Week".

and the Spring Festival. The girls’ mothers are guests at the festival.

Each hall has a resident counselor, She holds a masters

~-degree-in-educational personnel.

There are from one to five graduate students in each dorm studying for their masters who assist the counselor and several

. junior ‘and senior women who

help supervise study and recreation. » s » A SOCIAL chairman is elected

by the residents of each unit of *

the dormitory system and these girls form a committee to coordinate the inter-dorm program. Each social chairman also has a group of five assistants, Besides the planned parties, the social chairmen encourage the coeds to participate in intermural sports between the other dorms and the sorority houses and in campus activities. The activities include work for

the YWCA, the Association of Women Students, departmental clubs and church groups.

o . n THERE'S no “date bureau” system. The eounselors feel that the girls can supply that | service without any outside | help. And now that the coeds | are outnumbered by the men students the problem has solved itself. The dorm residents are not forced to participate im either the social or the extra-curri-cular activities. However, the | counselors report that if they notice that any girl is being “left out” of the fun that goes with college, they confer with her to decide what her special interests are. All of these services, plus the use of modern, well equipped recreation rooms, are available to the dormitory residents for a social fee of $3 a semester.
