At Headdress Dinner Dance 1 One of Capital's Gayest :
Fashions of 1900 Prevail
Capital Capers >.
~~ Lillian Russell Hat Cops. Prize; i Cow Country Does All Right : By ELISE MORROW , WASHINGTON, Mar. 5—The French ambassador's wife wore a red wig and one of Washington's leading hostesses wore a hat, which had belonged to Lillian
Russell, the other evening at what was probably the gayest and
most amusing party of the capital's current social season. .
It was a headdress ‘dinner and dance, with-the guests done
up--above the neck—in the fashions of 1900, The hosts were two of the : most desirable “extra men" in Wash- % ington--Capt, Plerre Lancelot, naval attache to the French embassy, and Jean Daridan, French embassy cou selor, and the party was held at _M. & Daridan'srhome. 4 5. These two bachelors are among
ton who repay their social obligations. Most of the footloose fellows feel that their mere golden presence is sufficient compensation for the food and liquor they lap up at other people's parties.
French embassy people, lots of State Department folk, two lonely Britishers and members of what is probably best described as the young, decorative set =-no homespun, cow country, “way-down-in-Missouri” or “way-down-on-the-Wabash” influences. -
Elise Morrow
However, the cow country made out all right, The Congress- |
man from Oklahoma; tall, attractive A. 8. Mike Monroney, won the first prize (male) for his hairdo. He wore fluffy whiskers and moustaches, with his graying hair brushed forward. Mrs. Monroney wore a. white wig and red and white striped dress with a bustle, : The first prize (female) was carried off by Mrs. Robert Low Bacon, widow of the Congressman from New York, Mrs. Bacon, & prominent Washington party-giver in her own right, wore a blond wig with the spectacular Lillian Russell hat, which was covered with sweetpeas and pink bow, : This was a vivid, beautiful party. All the women looked amazingly lovely, when you consider the usual Washington party group, and all the men were decorated with spit curls, mutton-chop whiskers, gray derbies or top hits. * The guests ate a buffet dinner of turkey, ham and hot lobster dishes, and danced until after 2 a.m.
Unemployment Won't Give
Sen. Tydings Any Trouble : Unemployment, which threatens United States Senators every six years, should hold no terrors for Maryland's dapper legislator, Millard E. Tydings. He could always make a living as a mimic at least, that's the opinion of guests who have watched him perform at dinner parties here recently, The prize sibjects of his
...take-offs are Mrs, Eleanor Roosevelt and Geri. Douglas MacArthur.
President Truman's social life is not ail big banquets and speech-making, or official receptions and handshaking, Once in a while, he gets a chance at the kind of party he really likes, a small, quiet dinner with good friends, Such was the dinner (only six guests) which the Secretary of the Air Force, handsome Stuart Symington, and his beautiful wife, Evie, give in the President's honor the other evening at their apartment in the Shoreham Hotel, ; In the meantime, Mrs. Perle Mesta, the Washington hostess
who is a close friend of the Trumans, is planning a dinner Tuesday |
evening in honor of the Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn. The really hot item in Washington's social whirl, however, is Dwight D. Eisenhower—or, more properly, Gen. and Mrs. Eisenhower. Keeping track of whose food they're eating is quite a task, now that they are back in the capital for the general's brief tour of duty—the primary purpose of which appears to be to compel the Army, Navy and Air Force to admit they are allies. : The Eisenhowers were among the guests the other evening at a dinner party given by Mr. and Mrs. George M. Morris (he's a prominent Washington attorney). Following the dinner, John Jay of Williamstown, Mass., the official photographer of the Olympic Games, showed his pictures of the skiing and skating events which took place in Switzerland. Other guests included Gen. and Mrs. Omar Bradley, French Ambassador and ‘Mme. Bonnet, the Italian Ambassador and Signora Tarchiana, Associate Justice and Mrs. Harold H. Burton, Sen. and Mrs. Leverett Saltonstall (Massachusetts), the Secretary of the Army and Mrs. Kenneth C. Royall (Mrs. R. sat beside Tke
and found him witty and charming as always), and Gen. and Mrs. |
Clifton B. Cates (he's boss of the Marines).
