The Chaplain, who had studied and prayed with him, came to bid him farewell as he “walked the last mile.” His two associates took their position, one by one, on the scaffold, and quickly pinnged from time to eternity, John Brown shuddered as his cell door opened and he envisioned the hangman's noose

being placed around his neck. But, instead, he was handed an envelope, with the announcement, “Here is a pardon from the, governor.” His joy was so great it wad painful. He wept, he laughed, he shouted, he praised the Lord. If one could be so deeply moved by having a charge against him forgiven, whereby his life is prolonged, for just a few years in a world of trouble and disappointment, how much more deeply we should be stirred at the thought of ‘having our sins forgiven, and our lives spared, not for a Httls time, but for eternity; not in a world of “trouble, but in a world-of eternal peace and happiness. But under what conditions will our sins be pardoned, and our days prolonged for ever more? Only when we heed the admonition: “Let the wicked forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return untg the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him: and to Our God, for he will ABUNDANTLY PARDON.” Isa. 55:7. In order to have our sins pardoned and blotted out, we must be truly converted, for the Bible says, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted THAT your sins may be blotted out.” Acts 3:19. “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye SHALL NOT enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matt. 18.3. Friend, have you received your pardon from the great Governor of the universe? If not, you are still under sentence to be consigned to the lake of fire and brimstone. No one will ever be pardoned until he seeks for, and obtains that transformation of character that will bring him into’ harmony with his Maker, Christ had reference to this experience when He sald, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3. This new birth comes only to those who yleld to the control of the Holy Spirit, and render absolute, willing o to God's word, If one is truly born again, he forsakes all evil ways. He is no longer ill-tempered, impatient, unkind, unforgiving, He is deeply interested in the welfare and happiness of others. It will be easier.to be good when he is around. If you have experienced no such transformation, you can rest assured that you have not been born again. For the Scriptures declare, “If any man be in Christ, he is A NEW CREATURE: old things ARE PASSED AWAY; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Cor. 5:17. ‘Friend, have you been converted? Have your sins been pardoned? or does the sentence of doom still stand registered in heaven against you? If you . have not found peace and pardon, let me urge you to “Seek— the Lord WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND, call ye upon Him while He is near.” Isa. 55:6. There is danger in delay, for the heart may becorhe “hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” In that great day when the sentence is executed on the sinner, “How shall we escape, if we NEGLECT so great salvation”?
