On Age Technicality;
By JIM HEYROCK,
John Thomas Beaten Times Sports Writer
CHICAGO, Feb, 22--It's now up to the fighters in the four heavier weight divisions to take ring crowns home to Indianapolis from the tournament of Golden Gloves champions. The lighter classes, as far as the Indianapolis team is con
cerned, were eliminated last night in their first bouts in the ing in for sedtionals this
tournament. Only three of the first four weights did battle last night. Indianapolis was forced to do without the services of a flyweight when Ralph Saxton was eliminated for being under age even before he had an opportunity to weigh-in. He will not be 16 years of age until October. According to Golden Gloves rules, fighters must be at least 18 years of age before entering open class competation. Crowd of 7235 Indianapolis’ three lighter divisions went down to defeat quickly as the Tournament of Champions opened in Chicago Stadium before a crowd of 7235, a record opening night gathering. The heavier lads, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight were to weigh 'n this afternoon for tonight's fights. Robin Hood, who replaced Alonzo Easley as the middleweight member of the team, will be only a few pounds over the “wetterweight mit when he fights tonight. Hood was runnerup to Andy Anderson in the Indian. apolis tourney. * Losers Last Night Losers last right were Walter Haywood to Jesse Mangik of 118-open class; John - Thomas to Tano Avila, Kansas City, in the 126-pound class, and Horace Sumner to Tom Stoopes, Minneapolis, in the! 135-pound division. i A left jab repeatedly pushed; into his face, Haywood dropped a to Jesse Mangik
Apparently thinking he had clinched the decision, Suf¥iner went to the defensive in the final round. He blocked some punches but many got through his guard to find their mark. Remaining Slate One of the most colorful events in the sporting world, the Tournament of Champions will fight the four rephaining weights tonight and the survivors will do battle tomorrow night. In appearance, the Indianapolis team stands up with the best of them. They énter the ring clad in white trunks trimmed in black with white robes bearing black lettering. . Actions was scheduled in three rings again tonight. But tomorrow night there will be only a center right in use,
