over 10 years of age should own a good knife, provided they prove to their parents that it will be used as a tool and not a toy. Don't play with a knife! When Abe Lincoln was a boy, a knife was used to make many things around the house such as spoons, door latches, coat pegs, chair rounds and powder horns. Boys learned early in life to spend the long evenings around the fire whittling out some useful object. A knife is no good unless it is made of high grade steel that will hold an edge when sharpened. When sharpening, use a fine oil stone and hold the blade at an angle of about 20 degrees as you draw it over the stone with the edge foremost. When you carry a knife, keep it closed. You older boys keep your eye on “TRY IT” and one night next week we will make the shavings fly on bark whittling.
