Housewives favoring adoption of ‘the proposed ordinance registered their “smoke and filth” and scored past councils for ‘avoiding the issue of strict enforcement in control People Lose Faith Mrs. Josephine Pierson, 1544 Draper St. representing a group of residents of the Southeast section of the city, declared that the people of Indianapolis have. not lost interest in smoke abatement, but have lost their faith that anything will ever be done to improve conditions. Her group is “100 per cent for a strong ordinance with teeth in it,” Mrs. Pierson said. In reply, Guy Ross, chairman of the aviatione committee making a study of the smoke program, said, “We will give you a smoke ordinance if the people want it, and when you get it there will be someone at its head that will enforce it.”
Want Out-of-City Curb Delegation spokesmen expressed ‘a desire that provisions in any adopted ordinance be made to include industrial units within four miles of the city limits, but councilmen were doubtful that such a measure could be taken. Said the householders, “we can't help ourselves if factories keep on smoking.” The spirited discussions were not without voiced opposition to stiffer control measures, however, and some speakers stood firmly against their adoption.
