Shown to Press
By LOUISE FLETCHER NEW YORK, Jan. 11--The slim sithouet had its inning. yesterday as the New York Dress Insti's semi-annual press week ‘opened, It was well-represented in the five collections shown— those of Samuel Kass, MonteSano and Pruzan, Maurice Rentner, Jane Derby and the Edwin H, Foreman Co., for which Tina Leser is the designer. ° In-the Kass designs, slim lines frequently - aré varied by back, & tiers, pleated overskirts and side drapes. wide-skirted coats in the collection. Monte-Sano suits,” too, are long-lined, with hip interest provided by the detailing of pockets. Jane Derby gives full skirts the favored slim look by pleating them, not just the skirt alone, but the whole dress. (Bodice, sleeves) and all are frequently® pleated). Happily for the one who does the ‘pressing, pleats and tucks are quite often stitched in crosswise bandings. ‘Interesting fabrics in the collection are shantung taffeta used ~hy--Rentner;— Kass'-navy--sheer; wool; the creamy tussah and a silk-and-worsted ' combination at Monte-Bano’s, the black rodier Mnen and the novelty knit wools used by Jane Derby, and the cotton tweeds in Tina Leser's collec-

likely to go out on a limb in wild overcalls. i When you have a quick doubler on your left, encourage him to double by occasionally making simple overcalls on big hands. Now and then it pays to double opponents’ game con tracts, reached by hesitant “stretchy” bidding, even though you don't have nearly enough to set thefm in your own hand. The idea is to confuse declarer as to the position of key honor cards held by the defense. Handle this carefully. It is more likely to be effective against players like Mr. Muzzy. In his case you will merely be adding to the confusion. . > Always Consider Quality of Defense When deciding whether to bid for a game or to be satisfied with a part score, consider the quality of the defense you are likely to get. She's a dream-girl, a vision, an angel, and the thought of her as a useful wife seldom crosses his mind. Few women are ever too. deeply in love to overlook the solid practical side of a husband. They may be romantic about the institution of marriage, but. they're realistic about the man.
