© GLADYS ALWES is one Indianapolis businesswoman who doésn't worry about the proper balance between her working and her leisure hours. She solves the problem for herself by pretty the leisure hours, = = Patrons of her Music Shoppe on the main floor of Wilking’s sometimes kid her about the way she over ledgers and order books long after the store closes. ! “They think I'm trying to get rich,” she says. “It isn’t that. With the Martens Concerts and the Music Shoppe I've got two full-time jobs.” She hastens to correct any impression that the concert séries is a gold mine. “With production

Her mother, Dollie Williams Alwes, who, incidentally, was a descendant of John Hancock, was a church ginger in Seymour, where Miss Alwes was “born. Her father, the late Charles Henry Alwes, of Alsatian descent—hence the unusual name— moved the family to Indianapolis when Gladys was a little girl, After graduation “from Shortridge High School, Miss Alwes studied voice withs: Mrs, Carolyn Pike and piano with Miss Mary

‘| Didn't Get Very Far’

FOR some years, Miss Alwes sang alto in Elmer A. Steffen's Mendelssohn Choir, predecessor of the Symphonic Choir, serving also as treasurer and registrar for.the group. Of her ability as singer and pianist, she remarks, “I hate to say it, but I-didn't get very far. I can appreciate a lot more than I can do musically.” It was just by accident that she got into the retail music business. One Christmas she helped out during the rush in the Fuller-Ryde Music Co., then-in--the- Hume-Mansur Bldg. After the holidays, she stayed on in the _sheet-music department. ips " When the depression forced the store to close, a group of .local musicians ‘got together and 2 RAS A IER RI RE would open her own shop. : “I probably wouldn't have had the courage to start out by myself if all those people hadn't been so wanderful,” she says.
