Figures Increased Before World War II, Mr, Graham said, illegitimate births in Marion County ranged between two and three percent of the total annual births recorded, By 1944, they jumped to 42 per cent of the 10,788 births listed. The figure for last year shows that of the 15,005 recorded birth in the county, 483, or 3.4 per cent were {llegitimate. Roots of illegitimacy are in the home environment.

By FRANK ELEAZER United Press Staff Correspondent,
WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (UP) —Christmas, according .to the {Red Cross, can be defined as a |red-and-green booby trap. Not { even Santa Claus is safe. He has a tendency to catch fire. So do indoor Christmas trees; and:
Papa (not to be confused with]
Claus) is a good bet to fall off 'a chair, Grandma may come down with one or more broken hips. |And too many cooks in the kitchen no doubt will knock over the broth, scalding their feet. One solution is to abandon Christmas. The Red Cross figures this {s impractical and suggests instead: “Be careful.” Here's the formula: Get a fresh, green tree. Wet it all over. Shake. Then set it up with its base in a bucket of water. (Some tree stands include a war ter compartment.) It's too bad, the Red Cross said, that the same thing can’t be done for Santa. He's a fire hazatd, soaked or not.
The best practice here, the Red Cross suggested, 1s to keep this whiskered, padded, befurred old boy away from fire, That means, for one thing, no smoking. As for papa, if he gets home safe with his comb and brush set for mama, the Red Cross will be thankful, considering the Christmas eve trafic. “Lu Assuming he does, help him find the stepladder. Then he won’ have to stand on the dining room chairs to decorate the tree. In any case, keep him away from -the encyclopedia... These books are fine to read, but murder to climb on, in piles. The toys can be Grandma's downfall. ‘To avoid this, command the children to play with them, not let them lie on the floor, or stow them away in a corner. The kitchen, always a risky place, is at its worst around Christmas. . The Red Cross says this is because so many holiday guests have to be fed. “So many cooks and so much broth can easily mean trouble,” is
