and printing firm executive, “the man who almost became State Police superintendent,” settled back into business routine toaay. Through no fault of his own—unless you can blame him for not being acquainted with an obscure section of a. 1945 state law--he last week became victim of an unprecedented mistake in state political history. t was Mr. Campbell whom Governor-elect Bchricker named as his police superintendent on Thursday, only to find on Friday that qualifica« tions for the office, set up by the 1945 State’ Police Act, did not fit Mr. Campbell, Mr. Schricker apologized profuse it an “honest mistake.” He then nt to the selection. of another superintendent. Actually an attorney friend had put the governor-elect on the spot.
taw Was Overlooked MR "SCHRICKER had asked the lawyer to bring him up to date on state statutes affecting § the office, The only. comment on the state police superintendent appointmient which the attorney gave Mr. Schricker was tp the effect that the 3 superintendent could be’ relieved from his post at the will .of -the governor There was no comment on the 1945 requirement that the appointee “shall have servéd at least five years as a police executive, or have had five years experience in the management of military, semii-military or police bodies of men,” Mr, Campbell served approximately two years fn the army during World War I during which time he had spent nearly a year overseas as an Infantry sergeant in the 84th division. That was all his military experience and it ‘wasn’t enough. Surprised, ,to- say the least, Mr Campbell declared, “I blame no one. I know the governor made an honest mistake.”
