As a gas user, you i are actually paying LESS for gas today than you did 1 in 1935. Yet, manu» Tact costs have increased tremendously.

Take ‘payroll, for instance. It takes many. more people today to operate the Gas Utility than it did in 1936. At higher rates of pay. Payroll costs have increased 200% in 12 years. _Gas consumption has almost tripled in that - period. It takes thousands more tons of coal to make gas... . at prices that have gone from $4.14 a ton to $9.29. It takes millions more gallons of oil than it did in 1936. Oil has-gone from 5c a+ gallon to 13c. These three items alone totaled a little over-three million dolars-in— 1936. Today they total over 10 million dollars.

Yet ., : the general gas user has experienced

no increase in gas rates. There is no mystery about this. The secret lies in the sale of by-

SHAE; —— ony coke: By ring a better foundry coke and carefully marketing it, the Gas Utility is selling over eight times as much foundry coke as it did in 1935—and _ foundry coke prices ‘have more than doubled since that time! Thus, increased manufactur- - ing costs—up-to now—have been absorbed by thisend of the business. ~~ It is a job in itself to serve gas to a city the size of Indianapolis. It is also a job in itself to make a better foundry coke and mike enough of it so that it captures and holds a highly competitive market. Yet the Gas Utility has done both jobs . . . and done them well. : ‘As the beneficiary of a public charitable trust . . . you have gained by the performance of these, two tasks. It takes technical know-how,

agement, to’stay on top in a competitive business world. The record of the past 12 years is your best assurance that the Gas Utility can do a job for you in the future, too.
