Glass, Plastic Frocks Still In Dreamland
Some Old Fibers Main Displays
By BARBARA BUNDSCHU United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Nov. 27—The wartime dreams of glass and plastic dresses that could be cleaned with & damp cloth and would last forever have vanished in the praectical world of peace and business,
Few of those “dream” fibers turned up in the 210 examples of contemporary textile production currently on display at Metropolftan Museum of Art. Those that did were ‘upholstery, drapery and industrial fabrics. And most of them were more commendable for institutional use than for home beauty. : : The museum said it made no special effort to hunt out new fiber developments. It asked more than 125 fiber and fabric -firms to submit their own best work, however. And it did select most of the new type fabrics submitted. The glass fiber people said they have decided it never will be practical for clothing because it's non-absorbent and unstretchable. Glass drapery fabrics are in evidence in increasing quantity. They still have a windowglass shine. but new treatments and combination with other fibers are ex-| expected to make them as attractive as they are fire-proof and easily washed before too long.
Limit Plastic Yarns To Upholstering Field
Glass marquiset also is in production for curtain material. Plastic yarns—with the exception of nylon, a pre-war development of increasing adaptability— were confined almost entirely to upholstery fabrics for automobiles and railroad trains where hard wear and easy washing make them especially useful. One heavy brocaded upholstery fabric of. twisted plastic yarn proved such yarns may yet have a large future in that field.
The majority of new dress fabrics in the museum's show are the result of combinations. of tried and true fibers, Silk and wool, cotton and silk, rayon and fur and acetate and viscose rayons are teamed with complete assurance among the pure silks, solid cottons and 100 per cent wools. The mixtures have added strength to beauty and achieved new colors and feels. L Top for luxury among them is a silk and cashmere combination which comes out with a heavy silk back and dark cashmere pile surface as soft, glossy as one could wish. It sells for around $30 a yard, ! A cotton and nylon combination comes out a crisp, washable taffeta which should be almost impervious to wear. Cotton for strength and rayon for gloss is an effective upholstery fabric combination,
Sponge Stains Sponge off “coke” stains and other stains before you launder your washable frocks and blouses. Hot water may “set” a stain and a badly soiled spot is more difficult to find when the garment is wet. 2

This man is all right, I guess, and he certainly likes mother. He seems to like me, too, though I don't talk to him much. I just can’t stand to have him around for he's taking my mother away from me. It seems pretty silly, her having a boy friend at her age. TERRY. You'll have to be lonely to know how lonely your mother has been and You'll have to reach her age before ydu know how young you can feel year after year. Your mother is quite a person. She could easily try to monopolize you, with you two living such secluded lives. That would bore you and she knows it. : She knows you'll find a life of your own. Why, right now, you're well on your way to finding it, for you have boy friends and you're planning college. She knows you'll keep adding new interests. Be glad she has kept that spark and attractiveness, and that she’s still a good mother, Terry. She hasn’t complained or been selfish about you—she’s made your life together fun. It's your turn to make her happy.
Sorry, T. A. 8S, R. C. W., Lonely Widow, Mrs. J., Lonesome, T. P. W. and V. R. D.—no names. MRS. MANNERS.
Remembers Old Flame
MY BOY FRIEND says he can’t stand his old girl friend, but he carries a photo of this pretty girl and she wrote on it “I love you — Your Baby.” He says I'm the only one, but refuses to give up the picture. What should I do? # PATIENT WAITER. He wouldn't have nearly so much fun carrying “Baby’s” picture if he didn’t think you minded. I'd outdo him — see some of those boys whose phgfos he destroyed—that picture of his may disappear in a hurry.
Protect Good Name SEVERAL PEOPLE have talked about me because I've been going out with a boy who has somewhat of a bad reputation. He changed after he was discharged from the Army, I know. Will he hurt my reputation? I think he's swell. He treats me wonderfully and hasn't tried anything yet. What should I do? PERPLEXED, CITY. Boys deserve a big hand and some true friends, when they try to regain their reputations ~—but girls need a hand in protecting their good reputations. Talk to your mother. She might persuade some other mothers to include this boy at parties. It wouldn’t be long before he’d be accepted if he acted around other girls and their parents the way he does around you. It's up to him to convince people he's all right— it isn’t up to you.

Don'ts for Girl Trying to Rise
In Business
A MAN who employs a number of office workers wonders how girls expect to get ahead in the business world if they do these things: Claim skills they don't have when applying for a job. Never do anything they aren’t told specifically to do. Wait to be reminded to do jobs that should become routine after the first few days. \ Answer a business telephone in a breezy or chatty manner. Forget to give messages they have taken over the telephone. Skip out for coffee or cokes three or four times a day. Do their social telephoning during office hours. ' Spend a lot of time. gossi with other girls in the office. " » 5 DRESS for work as though they were dressing for a party. Expect the boss to listen to a lot of personal chatter about themselves, their husbands or their dates, their health, ete. Act too familiar with customers and other office callers. Talk in a loud voice. Use office time to catch up on correspondence and other personal business. Ask for time off whenever they want it, or, just as bad, pretend illness when they want time off. , Make a habit of getting to work late. Give their employer the idea that they feel they are doing him a favor to work for him.

. A FORMER New York model has made a success in a unique business. She’ rents hats to women. Not just any hat, but the right hat to please a certain ‘man, Before she rents a hat she asks all sorts of questions— not about her customer, but about the man the customer hopes to impress.
