Bosporus—A Sight
Author, Fiancee Take Sightseeing Tour,
Sample Toothsome Fish, Turkish Beer
By LILLIAN TRUAX i Being an amateur at this travel business, the temptation to do | some sightseeing, a la tourist, was too great to resist. So, Tippy set about showing me some of the nearby places of interest. I= Its world-famous reputation and Tippy’'s glowing description of |= the Bosporus made this famous waterway first on my list. Lillian Truax of Clermont is now in Turkey waiting for the red tape to clear so that she can marry her Indiana University sweetheart, Ismail Hakki Egilmez. As a prelude to taking up her new life in lsfanbul, Miss Truax goes on a sightseeing tour with her fiancee. This is another in her series of articles on the experiences of a Hoosier girl in the Turkish capital.
It's a painting] Miss Truax come to life. The summer house is located in a little resort town called Sariyer, almost within shouting distance of the Black Sea and our aggressive, - vodka-drinking neighbors. The Turks refer to these neighbors in unprintable terms, but, they, have apparently cataloged them along with death and taxes, and life goes along smoothly, without tension or outward fear. ” s ”n THE HOUSE, itself, is a very old, four-story, salmon - colored structure of 16 mammoth rooms, | numerous hallways and bathrooms, and two kitchens. On the second floor, facing the sea, there is a bay window which juts out over the street; and directly above, on the third floor, is an open balcony. The main parlor has a tiled floor, a huge crystal - chandelier and white marble steps that lead into the main hallway. All the rooms have 20-foot, ornately decorated ceilings, and the winding stairway goes up, up, up. A terrace leads off the dining room, into a small formally planted garden at the rear of the house, where even in November the flowers are a riot of color. At the end of the garden, smack against the steep cliffs, is a small servants house, tile-roofed and balconied. . . . quaint enough itself for a summer place. , The house is closed now, of . gourse, and Tippy and I rattled
my family (when and if) in its spacious rooms. Due to the unseasonably warm weather this year, many of the urants and “gazinos” are open at Sariyer. It was in one of the latter that I was introduced simultaneously to balik, Turkish beer and rakki. » » - . BALIK IS the name of a fish, the most delicious I have ever eaten, In the fall these silvercolored fish run in schools from the cold waters of the Black Sea, through the Bosporus toward the warmer Mediterranean. Balik is broiled over glowing = charcoal and served whole. S Sometimes (but not for me) it's is swimming in olive oil. The = season of the balik is a gay one for the Turks. Once having fished for them and eaten them, it is easy to understand why. Turkish beer is excellent, and a~= favorite of tourists. About twice I= as potent as American beer, it'= is considered the proper “mild” | drink for the ladies. '

There are no depart- |= ment stores, in the American!S sense, and most shops carry only |= one type of merchandise. ...One sells hosiery, another dress goods, another lingerie. Ready-made clothing is rare, so are attractively dressed display windows. Turks rarely enter a shop without a specific intention to buy, consequently merchants attempt to display samples of all their merchandise in their show-windows. The Turkish department store is the bazaar. :
