CAA Officials May Extend Local Air Show

Receive ‘Request To- Delay Closing By JACK THOMPSON All-weather flying demonstra-

tions at the Civil Aeronautics Administration Weir Cook Airport

proved so successful officials are planning to extend them through the first part of December, The show was originally scheduled to end Baturday. Demonstrations are being staged by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics as the sendoff of a 15-year nation-wide program to; simplify bad weather flying. | Swamped with requests from, aviation figures all over the world to be given the opportu- | nity to see the significant exhibition of air navigation aids, CAA officials said they are giving serious consideration to keeping open for a while. ] Tomorrow a number of tap notch aviation writers will arrive _ at the local airporf to inspect] new developments, including the, omni-range, distance ,measuring| equipment, precision beam radar and the instrument landing aystem. Before the air show is brought, to an end, state officials and aviation leaders will be invited to

spend a day at the laboratories. ” » »

Cross-Wind Landings CAA HAS developed a cross-| wind landing gear which it hopes will eliminate many serious acci-| dents resulting from ground loops and enable the building of single strip airports at half the cost of the multi-runway fields of today. Planes equipped with cross-wind | gear have made safe landings in winds up to 40 miles per hour blowing directly across a runway. When a plane having the gear touches the ground, its wheels point in the direction of the landing roll though it tends to weath-er-vane into the wind. ' In the future, CAA technicians believe there will be no necessity for building runways in several directions at airports because hel] cross-wind gear will compensate for varying winds. » s ”

Jet Plane Increase ALLISON'S is responsible for the increase in the number of| jet planes seen over Indianapolis lately. Three jets are now harbored in the Allison hangar at Municipal Airport. They are being used to test jet engines pro-

duced by the local manufacturer. . . -

Round-Trip Saving COLONIAL AIRLINES, an Eastern firm, has worked out an, ‘ unusual arrangement with the] Holland Steamship Line to allow vacationers a trip from the United | States to Bermuda by air and the| return trip by ship. Such a plan| saves passengers 10 per cent of’ the usual round-trip fare. .

65-Year-Olds Spurn’ Social Security Aid

ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 20 (UP) —Minnesota citizens who have passed the 65-year mark are passing up the chance to retire on Social Security pensions more often than they did during the depression years. Palmer Elder, manager of the 8t. Paul social register office, says the reason is that the available pensions don't go very far in meeting the high cost of living.! He says 65-year-olds are con-, tinuing to work to pad their wal-| lets, for the usual maximum pen"sion of $44.80 monthly to such| persons just isn’t enough.
