Conclusions Drawn Navy officers, who took part in the tests, believe: ° ONE: Airplane carriers can successfully dominate the air over vast Artic areas in an emergency. TWO: Navy ships can operate, efficiently and in combat as far north as the waters of Baffin Bay, which extends above the| 70th parallel. { THREE. The hunter-killer combination of air and destroy-| ers forces should be able to lick the submarine menace even in sub-Arctjc waters. ( FOUR. The navy's “frog men”, underwater demolition experts —may, play an important part in destroying anti-landing de-| vices on the shores of an enemy’s| land. | Ice Constant Menace There are many dangers oper-| ating in the far northern waters, however. Icebergs are many. Ice coats the decks of carriers, making. them dangerously slippery. Guns, decks, equipment are coated heavily with ice and the! crews must wage constant battle to keep the ships operational. | Special heating devices are] needed to keep the planes ready to fly. Icing in flight is a constant menace. . Crews must wear special foul weather clothing. Operating efficlency drops as the weather gets colder. Combat efficiency in subarctic waters is estimated at half that in southern waters. Despite this, the Navy confident of fighting well in the subArctic. Navy officers’ say far fewer difficulties are encountered from snow and cold at sea than] inland in the same latitudes.
