Cellulose Tape, Caution Saves Plaster When Nailing Into Wall

17, 1948

A By HUBBARD COBB, Your Handy Man There are two things to bear in mind when you start off to hang

something to a plaster wall.

*One is not to break up any more of the plaster than is n and the other is not to have the object you hang drop and hit you

ox the head at some later date.

“As a general thing, g Paster does not make an ideal base for

a nail. It's easy to pull the out. This condition can be partially avoided by driving the nail down at a slight angle. ‘This will give it it greater holding power and ‘is the reason why

hangers are ull 50 that they can't help but go in at the right angle. A little cellulose tape stuck over the plaster before the nail goes in will reduce the chances of ciigping) te plaster.

When you have a-really heavy object to hang from a. plaster wall, it is best either to place your nail so ‘that it goes into the wall |

studding or use some type of|

fastening device that will get in| back of. the plaster and laths and then expand to take a really firm

Pp. You can find the studding by examining the baseboard until you find nail heads. These nails go right into the studding so that!

if you come up in a straight line from them you'll have a piece of studding in back. If the wall is made out of steel framing with metal laths this idea isn't going to be of much help. ; What you do here is to drill a hole through ’the plaster at any point you want and then insert the fastening device.

Exercise Caution In Thawing: Pipes

Naturally, it won’t ever happen to you, but maybe sometime your next door neighbor's water pipes will freeze and then you will want to be informed on the subject of thawing pipes so that you can sit around and give him.advice.

The first rule in dealing with a

wise. You prove otherwise by checking ovee the entire length of pipe looking for splits or open seams. If the pipe appears to be okay, turn off the water supply to that line, open the faucet at the other end and start thawing. Always start thawing as near the open faucet as possible. Then, if there is a little split you didn’t notice, |you won't be caught with a high class flood on your hands.

Keep Those Rats Away From Home

There are any number. of different kinds of rats in this world, but the ones we are interested in this minute have long nasty looking tails and whiskers that twitch.

It’s just about impossible to say anything nice about rats. They carry nasty diseases, they eat a lot of food that should go to humans and livestock, and they even bite little children. In short, rats are rats. ¢ The best way to control rats is not to let them get into a house to begin with. Rats seldom use the front door but they seem to find plenty of other entrances. What you want to look for are those small openings around the foundation wall that may lead into the basement or the base of the

out the front office and get home: and go to bed. Here are a few of the things we are liable to say. If you are looking for 3 way to cut down your fuel bill, try mix= ing some of the snialler grades of coal in with the regulation stove size coal used for furnaces. The smaller grades will give plenty of heat but they cost less per ton than the larger size. Hence you save money. You can patch a tear in leather upholstery by cementing a patch to the under side of the leather

liquid cement. * A door that constantly bangs against a plaster wall is not doing either the plaster, the wall decorations or the door much good. It's a nice idea to fasten door stops to the baseboard or floor and put an end to this sort of thing.

They met here once before, in 1914, Mandius made his way to Canada and became a |rancher, After years of not knowing each other's whereabouts, the sister gave Mandius A Teas

house walls. Once you find the openings, close them up with something that rats can't gnaw through. Heavy wire mesh is good. So is concrete or metal. Don’t use ordinary wood because rats will gnaw through it. If you must use wood, use this new type of plywood that is flavored with something rats don’ t like. After you get the house sealed up tighter than Ft. Knox, take a look at some of the plumbing, particularly in the basement. Rats will often use a basement floor drain as an entrance and exit unless it is fitted with a tight grate cemented into the basement floor or securely attached to the drain pipe.
