By United Press The unbeaten Cleveland Browns, aiming for their third straight All-America Football Conference championship, were a lot closer! to it today as a result of their spine-tingling 14 to 7 triumph over the previously unbeaten San Francisco Forty-Niners. Now all the Browns have to worry about is another game with the Forty-Niners on Nov. 28— plus the three other games left on their schedule. A crowd of 82,769, largest ever to see a professional football game, packed Cleveland's Municipal Stadium yesterday to cheer the Browns as they took undisputed possession of first place in

Jones Scores Winning TD Cleveland scored on the second play of the game after Forrest Hall of the Forty Niners fumbled the kickoff and Lou Saban of the Browns recovered on San Francisco’s 14-yard line. Otto Graham carried the ball over a play later. Frankie Albert's deft passing and

Honors by Narrow Margin

By United Press Their leading margin wasn't much—in faet it couldn't be slimmer—but the high-flying Philadelphia Eagles were still alone atop the Eastern division of the National Football League while Chicago's Bears and Cardinals were in a-deadlock for first in the West. For the third time this year, the Eagles marked a 45-0 score up on the slate yesterday as they drubbed the Boston Yanks. That kept them just a half-jump ahead of the Washington Redskins and their Sammy Baugh. Meanwhile the Bears barely beat Green Bay, 7 to 6, and the Cards tripped the Pittsburgh Steelers, 24 to 7. For the Eagles, the chief story was - the passing of Tommy Thompson, aided by the running of Steve Van Buren. Thompson shot four touchdown passes of 70, 26, 20, and two yards while Van Buren contributed 134 yards on

the ground. It was the Eagles’ Moi

sixth win ‘against one loss and a tie. The defending champion Cardinals scored three touchdowns in the first half but were held to a field goal in the final two Periods in scoring their seventh win eight games. Two of the Cas touchdowns came in the first three and a half minutes of a 77-yard drive ending in a 42-yard pass by Ray Mallouf and then Charley Trippi returned Bob Cifers’ punt

Green Bay ‘got its touchdown when Jack Jacobs shot a 13-yard pass to Nolan Lunn for the touchdown, but Ed Cody missed the try for the extra point.

The 1048 college football campaign was completed for all but four of Indiana's clubs today. But the record showed that for the majority of the state's 21 collegiate elevens, the season was a disappointment. That. was .gspecially true in games involving “foreign” teams. While the Hoosiers had a decided edge on out-staters last year, they slipped way below the 50 per cent mark this time. To date, Indiana teams have dropped 43 games to out-state opponents while winning only 31. Butler's Bulldogs, winless in the Mid - American Conference, dropped five contests to across-the-border outfits. Little Taylor, a yearling in gridiron circles, finished with the same record. The upland team failed to win even one of its eight starts.
