School No. 3 in 23 N. Rural St. was one of the city's first progressive public schools. (Inset] E. L. Norris, principal, now directs the school staff.

A SERIES OF FIRSTS: Lucretia Mott School No. 3 had not been in existence very long before the progressiveness of its staff made itself evident. Located at 23 N. Rural St, it first opened in 1905. In 1913, after two new wings had been added

"* to the original building, the first

“open window’ classes for children needing special health consideration were begun. These started under the direction of Mrs. Harry A. Schwartz. ” » s MRS. SCHWARTZ was the first principal of the institution, and served until her marriage in 1918. She was Miss Alice Hill during her administrative years. Mrs.

* Schwartz was succeeded by Miss

Cecelia Galvin in 1918. Miss Galvin served 26 years as principal and was with the school for 38 years. Under her direction the school made its first experiments in “script-print” instruction for primary grade pupils. This system, designed to facilitate reading instruction, was developed until it now prevails in the city schools.

a a8 Mrs. Schwartz moved from the city to Cleveland, O., when she left the school, but Miss Galvin now resides at 836 N. Rural St.
