JUNIOR OUTGREW HIS BRITCHES
We Junior does that all the time . ney... and commercial users meant a never-ending expansion proand parents expect and count on it. What's hard to realize gram for which the Gas Utility paid twelve and a half milis that cities, like children, outgrow their britches, too lion dollars in round figures. traffic becomes heavier, parking problems arise, hohe shortages develop and just as with children, something must be done about things. The growth of Indianapolis has been tremendous, particularly during the war years. And apparently Indianapolis is a grand place, because many of the industries that, came during the war are staying . . . adding to the number “ol jus and making prosperity for all of us. ~~ » 3 Such a growth in Indianapolis posed a particular probleth to the Gas Utility. In 1935 there were some 77,000 gas users connected to the gas mains; today there are over 118,000 customers depending on gas. That’s an increase of 41,000 customers . . . a big increase, to be sure, but the
Brocaded Fabrics and Well Tailored
On top of these gross additions to the Gas Utility's plant, mains and facilities . . . expenses have sky-rocketed, too. The Gas Utility uses many more tons of coal, more gallons of oil and has more persons on its payroll than it did in 1936 . . and its costs are higher on these items, besides. The cost of coal, oil and payroll alone went from 3 million dollars in 1936 to over 10 millet dollars in 1947.
The Gas Utility has beech paying off its bonded indebted. ness, £00—buying itself for you, the beneficiary of this public charitable trust . . . and these payments have amounted to close to four million dollars.
