Blasts, Fire Hit Derailed Train

30 Cars Burn; Two Crewmen Hurt

MOBILE, Ala. Nov. 11 (UP)— Explosions rocked a derailed 100car freight train today and about 30 cars were believed to be burning in a swamp near Fruitdale, Ala. The train jumped the tracks about 4:30 a. m., injuring two crewmen. G. P. Brock, vice president of the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad, said "the wreckage caught fire and was still burning.|” It was fed by large quantities of crude oil, gasoline and butane. An airplane pilot said smoke from the wreckage could be seen 65 miles away. Trestle Set Afire The train was en route from Meridian, Miss, to Mobile. The two crewmen hurt were C. A. Pearce, flagman, and F. M Pierce, conductor, both of Merid: fan. . : Fire fighting equipment from Mobile was sent to spray the wreckage with a chemical fog in an effort to control the blaze and explosions. The wreck occurred on a trestle, which also was set on fire. Railroad officials said the tracks from Fruitdale to Mobile would be out for at least two days and that shuttle busses would be used along the route.
