rach Troops Open New Drive on Arabs

Batter Down Last Defenses On South Front

Expect Surrender Of Faluja Soon

By ELIAV SIMON United Press Staff Correspondent TEL AVIV, Nov. 10-—Israeli forces on the southern front opened a new assault today and overran Arab strongholds all the way to the approaches to Egyp-

itn-held Faluja, 32 miles south of 1787.”

Tel Aviv. Israeli officers expect Faluja,| one of the last two big Arab bases in southern Palestine, to capitulate within a few hours: Jewish forces already have cut off Faluja from all hope of reinforcement by land. But during a| visit to the front at mid-day, I found the Egyptians fighting back with artillery fire. Should Faluja fall, the Egyptians would be left with Gaza, on the coast 19 miles southwest of Faluja, as their only remaining major base in the Negev area of southern Palestine. Broaden Jewish Corridor’ The new Israeli attack was launched as President Chaim Weizmann appealed to President Truman to back Israel's plea that the United States order direct Arab-Jewish peace negotiations rather than merely an armistice. The Israeli successes during the past 24 hours already have broadened the Jewish corridor into and through the Negev, where supplies are being rushed t8 Israeli units in preparation for the coming rainy season. Captured Egyptian troops it is reported, told their Jewish captors that they would have surrendered sooner had they not been told by their commanders that the Jews would slaughter ~ them.

Gov. Gates added that he would ask two members of the old committee whose terms ex-

pired Nov. 2 to serye on the new €o! tee. They Were Rep. Robert ller, Decatur ' Democrat, and te Sen. John Kendall,

Get-Together of Founding Fathers Baffles Officials

A TS R——— , LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 (UP) —The county board of supervisors had history. troubles again today. In 1939 a WPA mural titled “Declaration of Independence— 1776” was hung‘ in the board chambers. It showed Washington, Jefferson and other revolutionary heroes.

~ s ¥ BUT IN 1946 someone pointed out that Washington was not presént at the Declaration, so yesterday the supervisors got around to changing the title to “Constitutional Convention —

But someone found 3 flaw in that too. Jefferson was in Paris during the convention.

C. of C. ‘Split’ On Smoke Bill

Junior Chamber Asks ‘Tough' Policy

The controversial smoke ordinance had forced an apparent rift today between the Junior Chamber of Commerce and its parent organization, the @hamber of Commerce. Differences between the two otherwise closely aligned organizations appeared as tne Jaycee| go _ _. announced its stand for a “tough” anti-smoke ordinance in contrast to the present proposal, which carries all the recommendations of the C of C smoke abatement committee and which has been termed ‘‘weak.”

Ask ‘End of Stalling’

Earlier the young business men made firm demands on City officials for an ‘end to stalling”

v

and the preparation and passage of a strict anti-smoke ordinance.

A few days after the Jaycees

‘lannounced they would support the recommendations ol their parent organization which had issued a

multi-point document of its stand

on smoke abatement.

It was from this document that the first proposed smoke ordinance was written by the City Air Pollution Board and Robert L.

Wolf, combustion engineer.

Adopt C of C Proposals After the board completed its!

first proposed ordinance it asked

for suggested changes. The Chamber of Commerce submitted an-

other lengthy list of suggestions

and Monday night the board voted to adopt these suggestions in their entirety. As a result of that action two public members of the board| threatened to resign. They, Mr. Wolf and Mayor Feeney charged the ordinance had been danger ously weakened. As a result of their stand, the Jaycee will send a delegation to Mayor Feeney Friday to discuss) ways Of replacing some or all of the so called strong points re-| moved from the original proposal| by suggestions of the Chamber of | Commerce.

Calls Ordinance a ‘Hodge-Podge’ Meanwhile, the so-called “weak-

proposed

officer is a Democrat—Lt. Gov.Elect John Watkins, who presides in an ex-officio capacity outlined ‘iby the state constitution. Under Senate rules, the presid{ing officer appoints Senate committees. That would give Mr. {Watkins the right to put Demoicrats at the helm of all commit{tees and perhaps badly handicap GOP attempts to stop any Demo- |: cratic efforts to ram their platform measures through both [branches of the legislature.
