at the South Bend institution in three positions. Now 21, he went through a rugged campaign in 1944 as a fullback, first string too, though only a freshman from St. George's Academy in Chicago. Helped Beat Irish

He weathered that campaign as a Navy trainee and in 1945 moved on to the Great Lakes base, where he did a bit of grid work too, in fact participating in the final game of the season in which the Sailors handed the Irish their last defeat. Since then it’s been block and tackle one after another for Wendell. In 1946 he came back to Notre Dame and spent the year at center. Last season Leahy shifted him to right guard and he hasn't been out of there since. Wendell has been a key man in development of Leahy’s twoteam offensive-defensive system| this season. On offensive he! plays right guard and wields terrific power both in the line and leading interference. On defense he becomes center man of three linebackers. Coaches! who have seen the Irish and es-

pecially those who have sent their team against the South Bend| Ee meat grinder have no hesitance|

in rating the trio one of the best in the nation.
