Radio in Review—

| Eating Crow

o ‘Experts’

NEW YORK, Nov. 6—It ill behooves anyone in the

coverage of the greatest upset in history. We were just as wrong, probably wronger, just as comic

job to talk about radio, not newspapers, and—to crib al

phrase from the victorious candidate — in the spirit of deepest humility—let’s get on with the job.

I listened and looked at radio

and television election coverage for roughly 12 hours, heard the rich, nourishing chomp of H. V. Kaltenborn and Fulton Lewis Jr.

eating crow, and finally switched

off the radio, possibly forever, at noon the next day after Kate

Smith explained just why every-| one had been so dead wrong. (She

wasn’t sure exactly but she suspected it was because the President had invoked the help of God.) “ » A MIASMA of astonishment began to emanate like vapor, almost visibly, from the mouths

of everyone from Walter Winchell] starting news.

to James A. Farley, about 8, and increasing in density] until 10:15 a. m. the next day when Gov. Dewey conceded de-|

feat. |

as ee] Nevertheless, with due allowance for the general surprise, the commentators—presumably |

experts—clung stubbornly to | preconceived notions which were being proved by the hour | to be disastrously wrong.

» o ” THIS IS somewhat understand-| able. These commentators without exception had crammed themselves for weeks with comment which began, or words to this effect: “Now that Dewey has been

elected and a Republican admin-;

istration has taken power, we may confidently expect . . .” and on and on. These comments -— rich, persuasive, thoroughly documented—lay on top of their minds and they couldn't appear to abandon them in face of the facts. The words “early and highly inconclusive returns” were bandied about until around 10

p. m. when they were aupplanted by “fairly complete but still inconclusive” and about 1 a. m. that phrase was thrown out for “Truman leads in so-and-so but the race is so close there that it may go in either direction.”

” THE GLARING fact that Pres-

{dent Truman's percentage of the Oli. is publicity chairman. |

popular vote remained almost from the outset about 3 per cent ahead of Gov. Dewey's was pointed out, to my knowledge, by only one man, a feller who certainly needs a friend today. Dr. George Gallup.

Impassive, a research man to the last, without explanation or

apology, at 9:20 p. m. when those “early and highly inconclusive returns” were still resounding around the air waves, Dr. Gallup stated without qualification that Truman would take 49 to 50 per cent and win a clear majority of the popular vote. (He didn't say he'd win the election though.) Give Dr. Gallup a small silver star for that one anyhow. 1 can't say the same for Elmo

Roper, the man who counted out month-old boy, was slain a few, Truman months ago, and who blocks from his home, 1201 Flet-|

was spluttering explanations all night long.
