SUNDAY I8 SUCH a fine day to do fine think-
on the car and other problems relative to the working day. This is the day of rest. This is the day when the sky should be the limit as far as exercising the brain is concerned. My opinion (wonderfully dubious word) is that more of us should indulge in luxury thinking on the seventh day of the week. Something with zing. Something like “the man in the street.” Oh, brother. .
Put Dewey in White House—Until
EVER SINCE last Wednesday I've been thinking about the man in the street, the man who was supposed to be the cross section of America. The mythical character that put Thomas E. Dewey in the White House last summer, kept him there until
i] 5:59 a. m. on Nov. 2.
After the initial shock wore off and cynical thoughts begin to creep into my mind, I asked myself: “What did Diogenes do when he wanted to find an honest man?” “He looked for him.” Messrs. Gallup, Roper and Crossley, I feel for you even though a bit of chagrin still lingers on.
But- it will wear off, I'm sure, in about 50 years.
or so. The man in the street is a tough customer to find. In fact, after reducing my height a good quarter of an inch by stomping the pavement so long, I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a man in the street. With a huge pad and plenty of paper and a hearty-fellow approach, the results didn’t roll in. The man in the street “didn't want any.” With no pad and pencil in view and the confidential approach, the man in the street still “didn’t want any.” With caution to the winds and my efforts taking me in the middle of the street where literally and actually there were men in the street, still no luck. They were more interested in being men on the sidewalk than accident victims in the street. Ahd that was precisely what one bounder told me. Another gentleman told me flatly he wasn't a man in the street. I asked why? He asked if I
{} was looking for a punch in the nose or a fight.
I said neither, of course. The most irritating thing about approaching people on the street is invariably they have their minds made up about what you want. Either they reach in their pockets or grumble and motion you to beat it. The man in the street doesn’t listen. That isn’t true in all cases. You get the type that listens most attentively only because you're holding a paper and pencil.

again, he might be the "average man" or "the common man" until you run a poll. That's when the trouble starts.
The Answer Came in Short Takes
THE ANSWER, when it finally begins to gurgle out in short takes and many “I mean,” is a hodgepodge of confused claptrap that finally ends with arms in the air and a wild look in the eyes and “You know what I mean.”
“Who is the man in the street?” This brought a ready answer from a citizen on E. Market St. “The guy who voted for Truman.” “Would you expand that answer, sir? And do you mind if I use your name? It will be the first on the list in this survey.” Bah, Here's a sample of the remarks made to this modern Diogenes:
“I don’t want to have anything to do with any more polls.” “Are you trying to say I'm a man of the street? Grrrr.” “Haven't you guys had enough?” “How should I know?” “I've got my own trouRles.” (Republican, no doubt.) “The man in the street is the average: American with an average income who lives an average life.” Thank you. You know, I think this man-of-the-street business is awfully ambiguous. The more I think about it the more confused I become. Move over, you pollsters, I'm joining the league. Can't make heads or tails of the man in the
street. I'm going to think this thing over, however.
