~ To Take Lead In GOP Reform

Requests Swamp University Head

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UP)— ‘Harold E. Stassen may be assigned the job of rebuilding the GOP for the 1952 presidential campaign, it was learned to- | ‘J day. Influential Republicans,y smarting from § the

suffered at the polls Tuesday, are urging the youthful former Minnesota governor to lead a movement to shape the party along more lib-| eral lines. These party liberals may meet | with Mr. Stassen in Philadelphia within the next 15 days for a “brass tacks” discussion of party reconstruction. Mr. Stassen, who lost the Republican presidential nomination to New York Gov, Thomas E. Dewey, refused to comment. But it was known, he has been swamped with Tetters, telegrams and telephone calls, many of them from GOP bigwigs willing to back him to the limit if he will undertake the reconstruction job. Mr, Stassen, president of the = University of Pennsylvania, told = E the United Press by telephone = = that he is “not ready to make any |= statement.” “I think the situation calls for gome reflection,” he said. One prominent Republican Sen- |= ator, who shares Mr, Stassen’s [= liberal views, said he is working |= on concrete proposals for the 2 party’s future. He added that he!= believes that Mr. Stassen is the = man to lead the “reform.” And als former governor, high in party = circles, agreed. He said he intends to talk with Mr. Stassen about it. Mr. Dewey, a two-time loser for the presidency, has announced he won't try again in 1952, One of Mr, Stassen’'s promises when he dropped out of the pres-| idential nomination fight at Phil-| adelphia was to work toward 2 strengthening “the liberal view- = point within the party.” He told the United Press he in-| tends to continue working toward | that end. But he wouldn't say how. Mr, Stassen’s position as president of the university will not interfere with his political activities, That's part of the tradition of the university. And he has an agreement on it with the board of trustees.
