Finds Hungarians ‘Praise’ Reds, Urge Friends "Return

Times Foreign ¢ ROME, Nov. 4—H jans at home are being forced to write letters to friends and relatives abroad in praise of their Communist regime. And many of these “come-baek-all's-well” missives are being received by Italy's Hungarian community, mostly concentrated in Milan. On a week-end visit to Italy's northern industrial capital, I confirmed this latest scheme of Budapest to dispel the outside world’s notions about conditions there. Milan recipients of such letters, once warned by relatives to stay away, are now being urged to return to their homeland. : Standad Form Many of these letters use the same phraseology, I am told, which indicates they are being dictated from a standard form, Until July of this year, letters came through with descriptions of miserable conditions and discon-| . tent. in Hungary. Hungarians ahroad were advised not to go back if they had so intended. Suddenly a lot of mail failed to| get through. After a period of silence, it began to flow again. Now all the letters are sweet and full of praise for the Budapest rulers. My Hungarian informants say Budapest has clamped down| a strict censorship.
