Archibald M. Crossley are close today’s election outcome. They both predict a large Thomas E. Dewey, but both + the popular vote.

Dr. Gallup gives Gov. Dewey 49.5 per cent; President Truman,| 44.5; Mr. Wallace, 4, and Mr. Thurmond, 2. Mr. Crossley gives Gov. Dewey 49.9 pet wig of the popular vote; t truman, 44.8; Mr, Wallace, 3.3; Mr. Thurmond, 1.8, and the others, 0.4. It is on the split-up’ of the popular vote that Messrs. are in sharp disagreement with Elmo Ry the poll taker who quit in September because he said a Dewey victory was certain, End-of-August Figures Mr. Roper’s end-of-August estimates on which he chose to stand throughout the campaign gave Gov. Dewey 52,2 per cent and Mr. Truman 37.1 per cent of the popular vote.

A Dewey victory by the popu-lar-vote majority given him by Mr. Roper would put over a number of Republican senatorial and congressional candidates who ‘are hard-pressed.

But the Gallup and Crossley estimates, if correct; mean -that strong Democrats in the battleground states will not have much trouble winning. They won't be swamped by an. avalanche of Dewey votes. Harry Rich, Washington barber who conducts a poll with the assistance of more than 1000 barbers throughout the country, makes the popular vote even closer between Mr. Dewey and President Truman, ‘although he

Dewey 345 electoral votes; Mr. Truman, 105; Mr. Thurmond, 38, and classifies 43 as doubtful—those of Minnesota, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. Predict GOP Senate Newsweek magazine's pre-elec-tion survey of 50 Washington correspondents give the composite prediction of 366 electoral votes for Dewey; 126 for Mr. Truman and 39 for Thurmond. The correspondents also predicted that |the next Senate would be 49 Re{publicans to 47 Democrats. Columnist Thomas L. Stokes predicts that Mr. Dewey will win 338 electoral votes to 149 for Mr. Truman and 44 for Mr. Thurmond. Columnist Marquis Childs gives Mr. Dewey 856 to 137 for Mr. Truman and 38 for Mr. Thur-
