Ivy Varieties Are Many |

IVY AND MORE IVY— Ms,

J. C. DeHority has a big assért-

ment of iv vy varieties in her plant window,

By MARGUERITE SMITH =A" CURLY headed ivy, a needlepoint ivy, a frilledleaf ivy—these are just three of the ivies that make a pretty plant window in Mrs. J. C. DeHority's home

at 6494 Broadway. The curled ivy is a mass of green ruffles. The needlepoint, descriptively named; is a clump of tiny leaves, The frilled is lightly ruffled. Others in her collection, some of them only now available locally, include her Raper-thin leaved green and white ivy. It's quite different from the more commonly seen firm ~ leaved variegated type. She includes Merion (not Marion) Beauty, for its compact growth’ and

small leaves. Hehn's . selfbranching, as {ts name d4ndi--cates, obligingly branches of

its own accord to make a neater plant than the old-time onestrand ivies. Sylvanian Beauty and an-

THIS COLUMN «gives pointers on specific problems of both indoor. and outdoor gardening. If, you're having plant trouble, send; our qugstions to Marguerite, mith, The Indianapolis Times, Indianapolis 9. Q—"“Will you tell me about the| depth for autumn planting of tour| o'clocks, zinnias, marigolds, morning glories?” asks Martha Doan, Westfield. A—Place tender seeds, like the) last three, much deeper than you, would in spring. Local garden-| ers who hive experimented with fall. planting say an inch depth I know. of none who has been" successful with] morning glories, so suggest that even an experimental planting of | these likely-to-rot sorts should be | in a protected well-drained spot. Four o'clocks are hardy enough) to self-sow sometimes, They also often grow a second year from|

- the tubers that live over under-

ground if they're in a warm exposure.

GARDENING CALENDER

REMINDERS for November’'s First Week — Have a bale of straw (or gather dead weeds and grass) to cover rows of carrots’and beets before the ground freezes. You can store them through the winter with a six to eigntinch protective blanket over them. Don't dig parsnips until they've had a real freeze If you want good flavor. Gather big bunches of mint, squeeze it into a glass jar and cover with vinegar to make a tasty meat sauce that's perfect with lamb.

other small leaved sort complete her present collection. - » ” IF YOU, too, have a yen to collect, true ivies in variety are perfect for windows that get

little sun, For the field of ex- }-

perimentation, indoors or out, is endless. Some 60 kinds of ivy flourish in England alone. Irish ivy, pale green, and Baltic ivy, noted for hardiness, are ohly two of many kinds named for their native lands. The family name of the true {vies (Hedera, from the ancient Latin name of some historic plant ancestor) distinguishes them from the many so-called, and misnamed, ivies such as that popular houseplant, grapeIvy. It's really a cousin of the grapevine — observe its young growth buds. Boston (sometimes called Japanese) vy, is the three-leaved sister of Virginia creeper or woodbine, which adds more confusion when it's called American ivy, One big difficulty we Hooslers encounter when we try to raise England's pet vine, is our , 8ood limestpne. soil. Mend the alkalinity of our native limestone by hunting up an oak tree. Then reset your ailing ivy

in the acid oak leaf mold and |

watch it revive. How it grows in such loose moisture holding soil. You'll see why when you

| recall how in ancient rhymes,

ivy always clings to the oak. » - ” OR, IF your ivy shows brownedged leaves, a common symptom, check these points. Too much hot sun? Try moving it to a less sunny window. Too little water? Keep it moist but not standing: in water. For

those roots need air part of

the time, too. Or could it be red spider, almost "invisible houseplant pest, life juices? Detect red spider by searching out minute webs under leaves. It is most likely to take up residence on a dirty 1vy. Be sure yours gets'a weekly

shower under the faucet. Use a ||

hard spray really to clean it.

Or is your ivy starving? Give it the ammonia treatment. Stir

a teaspoon of household ammonia Into a quart of water. Water your ivy once a week with this high nitrogen ertilizer.

Once ivy grows thriftily, iy's a decorator’s dream, usefii

wherever you can give it light" —on bookshelves, on desks and

tables. Or. grow your fvies in pairs, keep one in whatever dark spot needs it, later switch it to a favorable window while its partner takes over for a while. Don’t expect the newer, tiny leaved and many-branched sorts to grow as fast as the older outdoor varieties that Grandma used to bring indoors. But the very slowness of their growth makes these small {vies better for that special place where you want to use them all winter,
