Recalls State Strike Duty
Company H Has 29th
Annual Reunion By JACK THOMPSON Back in October, 1919, an Indiano State Militia outfit, composed of Indianapolis businessmen, saw a grand total of 24 days of service during the Calumet area steel strike, but they still get together to talk about it. ! Because of the short duration of their active duty, the reunion). held each Yous by members of Company H is, perhaps, one of the . strangest of all present-day ‘military reunions. A couple of weeks ago the surVivin, _members_ of the company staged their 29th clambake in the Naval Armory here. Among the 32 present, out of an original 118, were a number of prominent local names, Why do these men still maintain such a close relationship with one another? Had a Fine Time

Anderson, Howard | W. Wills, Albert J. Wohlgemuth and David C. Braden, only living commissioned officer in the outfit; (middle row) George A. Newton, Mark P. Helm, Hiram J. Raffensperger, F. Neal Thurston and Thad R. Baker; (back row) Millard V. Warner, Mark Ww. Pangborn, John M. Corwin, Howard T. Griffith and Armin A. Bohn.
They are:
They'll tell you they had a fine time while they were quartered in the Hubbard Steel Foundry at East Chicago. “It SBumnef Clancy, captain of, the outfit, were still alive, he'd] recall how his boys used to shoot | dice on the catwalks high above the cold steel furnaces. Harry C. Anderson, purchasing] agent for the Indianapolis 8chool| Board, was the company mess sergeant. He delights in nar-| rating “The Case of the Missing | 'ood » Anguished cooks were at a loss to explain the mysterious dis-| appearance of the choicest cuts of meat from the ice box in the} mill, reflected Mr. Anderson, who, now holds the only official capac-| ity in the organization, secretarytreasurer, Mystery Later Solved He said he stopped the thievery by equipping the cooler with a Yale lock but that the riddle remained unsolved until after the company was relieved by federal troops and returned to Indianap- - olis. Then it leaked out that the { mystery was linked with the cat{walk dice games. When gambling {broke up in the wee hours, the . participants would pool their-re-sources, slip the night guard in the kitchen a 10-spot and dine royally, Not until after the company was deactivated did the citizen soldiers realize that they had experianced one of the best times in, Shale lives, ‘ ; realization was responsi‘ble for the start of the reunions the next year.
