another glimpse of Betty Grable's famous legs. “That Lady in Ermine” unfolds a tale as unusual as it is fascinating. Humorously it reveals the story of a beautiful countess, Betty Grable, and her night-long defense against the siege of her ancestral castle—and her heart—by an en-

Staging Comeback
HOLLYWOOD, Ott. 29 (UP) —The hottest comeback in Hollywood now is that of th almost forgotten two-star system. The man who is betting most on its great return to popularity is James Nasser, who reunited Fred MacMurray and Madeleine Carroll in his. first production for United Artists, “An Innocent Affair.” # Mr. Nasser got them together because he remembered what

Says It Takes Happy Person for Tragic Role
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 30 (UP)—Ann Todd belleves it takes a really happy perspn to play a really tragic part. ' And conversely, she sid, she did her best comedy roles when she was miserably unhappy. Her personal life, she said, completely explains her quick switch from comedy roles on the stage to serious ones in the movies, “When you're unhappy, one of two things can happen to you,” Miss Todd said. “Either you go to self-pity, and make everyone about you
miserable, or you become brittle, which opens
the way for comedy.
“Well, I have been unhappy--very unhappy. |
My domestic affairs were in such a state that life hardly seemed worth the effort. And so, being an actress, I played rip-roaring comedy, “I remember being miserable at home, dragging myself to the theater and playing for laughs in a succession of comedss.”
stars had in a series of pictures at Paramount about eight years ago. Now that he's seen his
picture, he wants to team them |
for a picture this year.
” ». . “I DON'T know what happened to the two-star system,” Nasser said, “but the boxoffice lost somiething when it" van ished. Some years ago a starring combination like Carroll and MacMurry really pulled them in. Now the teams are broken up, and casts are assembled of individual stars.” But Mr, Nasser thinks movie-
| goers really would rather see
romantic teams like Garbo and John Gilbert or Vilma Banky and Rod LaRoque. “The stage has produced a lot of starring combinations that lured whole generations into
| the theater,” Mr. Nasser said.
“Mr. and Mrs. Drew and Otis Skinner and Maude Adams set records when they appeared together.”
. © 8 » A ROMANTIC team, however, has to involve two people who look believably in love, he said. “There are far too many pictures in which the boy and girl
| ¢ould never like each other and
thé audience gets the .illusion that they would,” he said. “They should be sufficiently different to be attractive to each other.”
