Demand Improved Smoke Ordinance

Women Voters Insist | On Stringent Law’ A A demand that the city's’ proposed new smoke ordinance he made more stringent was issued today by. the League of Women Voters, In announcing its opinjon of the measure, the league, which has taken an active part in smoke abatement for several years, disclosed it was not included among those organizations asked to comment -on the proposed ordinance. Mrs. Charles T. Harman, chairman of the league's city affairs committee, said the committee is comparing the proposed ordinance with ordinances in other cities and will ave a detailed report by Nov. 8 Reaffirms Stand Meanwhile, the league . reaffirmed its stand which it announced in December, 1947. It includes four points: ONE: That air pollution control be made a division of the Saety Board. TWO: That the Air Pollution Board be made smaller, probably not more than five members who are actively identified with development and improvement of the city and who are not interested in the sale to the public of any fuel, fuel burning, combustion or smoke-abatement devices. THREE: That standards of technical training or experience in the construction and smoke ahatement fields be set up for the combustion engineer and his staff. FOUR: That technical stand-

Butler University swung into Homecoming week-end today with activities which will lead up to a climax at the Butler-Washington of St. Louis football game tomorrow afternoon. Returning alumni and friends - began their annual trek to the campus this noon as freshmen and sophomores staged their annual scrap in front of Jordan “Hail.” James Glass-of Indianap-| olis was to lead freshmen.in a charge against the greased pole topped by the sophomore flag. - James Crabbe, also of Indianapolis, was to head the defending classmen. Plan Broadeast This afternoon, university officials will greet alumni in a radio broadcast. Rod Emery, Indian-«-apols-seniop speech: have charge of the program. A bonfire-pep session will be staged at 7:30 p. m. on the athletic fleld north of the Fieldhouse. The annual homecoming parade, led by the homecoming queen, and the Butler band will move through the downtown area at 10 a. m. tomorrow. Fraternities and sororities will enter floats in the parade. Game Begins at 2 Judging of fraternity and sorority house decorations will take place at 11 a. The Butler-Washington game} will begin at 2 p. m. After the game President and Mrs. M. O. Ross will hold open house at their home, 520 Hampton Dr. The annual homecoming dance will be held at 9 p. m. in the Fieldhouse gymnasium endIng the activities.

Resident Here 60 Years Dies

David Monroe, 2437 N. Meridian® 8t., resident of Indianapolis for more than 60 years, died| this morning in his home. A native' of Davenport, Iowa, Mr. Monroe was 88. He had. retired in 1924 from the sales department of Stapdard Brands, Inc., after working 35 years for that firm. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Monday in Flanner & Buchanan mortuary with burial following in Crown Hill In addition to his wife, Mrs. Mary D. Monroe, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Lundy, New York; two sons, Robert W. Juvenile Fugitives Captured Quickly

Five fugitives from the Marion County Juvenile Center, ranging in age from 10, to 12, were rounded up by police shortly after their escape yesterday. The Youngoters, who said. they didn’t like fit at the Center, squeezed through a small hole under the fence surrbunding the institution when a supervisor ‘momentarily turned his back on 1 und activities.
