© By JOE WILLIAMS, Scripps-Howard Staff Writer CLEVELAND, Oct. 9-The series continues to look like ‘something out of Currier and Ives. The gay 90's touch remains prominent as both sides box instead of slug. A two-base hit is a tremendous demonstration of batting malevolence. Even the White Sox famed hitless wonders of 1906 must have carried more menace, AE The Braves weren't ‘supposed to murder outfielders, Especially when their cne long-ball hitter, Jeff Heath, became physically insolvent. But the American League champions, here on their home grounds, which, incidentally, is equipped with a trick fence, were rated high in the better homicide circles.
"a . " no» id THERE HASN'T been enough destruction in the series to bring a mild word of reproof from a nursery teacher. That's why it's been dull from the point of view of the customers. To them the most enchanting sight in baseball is a pitcher getting his brains knocked out. The Indians are leading two games to one and seem sure to wrap it up speedily. They've depended largely on defense, that is pitching and support. In 26 innings they've scored six runs, made 17 hits, including three doubles and drawn seven walks. This means they've been on base 24 times. The National Leaguers, with two runs, count ‘em, two, 15 hits, including two two-baggers and six walks have been on 21 times.
s ~ ” ” . ” ALL TOLD the two rivals have scored eight runs in three games. The Yankees and the Dodgers scored that many in the first game of the 1947 World Series, and by the time the second game had been played they had scored 21 runs. These figures merely stress the mystery of what has happened to attack in this series. « Fine pitching is inspiring to watch and interesting. too, but for better or worse, it hasn't mass appeal. Pitching has decided each of the three games. It was ironic that Feller had to bow to Sain, in spite of a two-hitter, but it must be admitted he bowed to remarkable pitching.

LEMON CAME next and he should have scored a shutout for the Indians’ first victory. Yesterday it was Bearden, the Purple Hearter, who had won the play-off game to put the In. dians into the series for the first time in 28 years. Bearden pitched a marvelous game. Not one pass. Only five hits. And he fielded flawlessly. Thus, the Indians have had four pitchers to go all the way in four big games: Bearden in the play-éff, followed by Feller, Lemon and again Bearden in the first three series games, ’ The Braves haven't been able to match this sort of pitching. Only Sain in the opener, has lasted. Spahn took an’ early bath, in the fifth in the second game. Bickford was taken out before the fourth was over yesterday.
~ . » . ~ THEN THE relleters came in and proceeded to pitch glittering ball. Barrett and Potter went 425 innings without allowing «an earnéd run in the second game and, yesterday, Voiselle and the aforementioned Barrett pitched shutout ball for another 4%;-inning stretch. , The: weather may be affecting the hitting. There's -always a stiff wind blowing in from the Charles River in Boston’where the first two games were played. And out here yesterday it was damp and chilly, though it seemed to me the wind favored the hitters.
. ~ » . k ~ » ~ . THE BRAVES’ rookfe shortstop, Alvin Dark, blew yesterday's game and is therefore a leading candidate for goat-of-the-series ‘honors. He made a wild throw on a possible double-play ball and it gave the Indians their first run in the fourth. One was all they needed. It was Dark’s third error in the series. The Indians came up with two double plays, but in neither instance was Lou Boudreau, their manager, who is also general manager of Double Death, Inc., involved. If the Indians have decided they can do it without Boudreau it must be obvious they feel they have nothing further to fear from the National Leaguers. As a matter of record, the brilliant Frenchman didn’t even get a ball out of the infield yesterday. Maybe he’s hored too.
