Sees Possible Answer in Blood Tests .
To Track Down Disease Incidence .
Hard-to-find cancer will be much easier to control when scientists learn to find it through mass surveys, Dr. Andrew C. lvy, noted physiologist and researcher, said here last night. Dr. Ivy, here to address Indianapolis doctors on “The Research and Cure of Cancer,” at the Medical Center, said some “acceptably accurate” serology (blood examination) might be the

answer, but it will take time. For those who believe we are at a standstill in cancer research, Dr, Ivy had facts to show otherwise. “If we can find cancer soon enough, we can cure, and that is |g the right word, from 30 to 50 per cent of the cases.” The latest discovery in the control of cancer was made in 1941 when it was found that the female hormone would cure about 20 per cent of prostatic cancer and that the male hormone would do about the same for breast cancer in women, he said. When asked about the possible *elationship between cigaret smoking and cancer of the lungs, windpipe and larynx, he said there are indications, but no positive proof, that cigarets are a factor. . We know definitely, he said, that the tar in cigaret smoke is carcinogenic (related to cancer) anf that tar will cause cancer when injected under the skin of a laboratory rat or rabbit. But the direct connection, he said, we are not in position to prove, although it has been noted that the prevalence of lung cancer among women has risen considerably since they began smoking in large numbers. Back to the blood test, he added, it took 25 years to make the Kahn test reasonably accurate in the detection of syphilis, and it will take time to work out some such technique for cancer.
